GREAT TRUTHS (Well, maybe not. You're call!)1. In my many years I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm, and three or more is a congress. -- John Adams 2. Suppose you were an idiot. And suppose you were a member of Congress. But then I repeat myself. -- Mark Twain 3. I contend that for a nation to try totax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle.   -- Winston Churchill 4. A government which robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul .   -- George Bernard Shaw 5. A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, which debt he proposes to pay off with your money.   -- G. Gordon Liddy 6. Democracy must be something more than two wolves and a sheep voting ...

Great Sports Quoted (And a Few Others!)      I'm working as hard as I can to get my life and my cash to run out at the same time. If I can just die after lunch Tuesday, everything will be perfect. - Doug Sanders, professional golfer   All the fat guys watch me and say to their wives "See, there's a fat guy doing okay. Bring me another beer." Mickey Lolich, Detroit Tigers Pitcher   Last year we couldn't win at home and we were losing on the road. My failure as a coach was that I couldn't think of anyplace else to play. - Harry Neale, professional hockey coach   When it's third and ten, you can take the milk drinkers; I'll take the whiskey drinkers every time. - Max McGee, Green Bay Packers receiver   I found out that it's not good to talk about my troubles. Eighty percent of the people ...

If Octoraro Orphie sees his shadow on Groundhog Day winter will hang around for six more weeks! If he doesn't spring is just around the corner. But this year there is an even bigger mystery surrounding Orphie. Experiencing the coldest winter in two decades Rick Rankin, the Hibernating Governor of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville PA, worries that Orphie's followers may not be able to coax him out of his hole. Rankin stated that they have a number of contractors in their Lodge and they considered building a “protective dome” over the entire Southern End of Lancaster County but they probably couldn't get the permits processed in time. So they've decided to coax rather than force their hero from his liar.       In addition to Orphie the Baby Groundhogs (new members accepted ...

If you're not familiar with the work of Steven Wright, he's the famousdry, erudite, comic scientist who once said: "I woke up one morning, and all of my stuff had been stolen and replaced by exact duplicates."His mind sees things differently than most of us do.   Here are some of his gems........       - I'd kill for a Nobel Peace Prize.   - Borrow money from pessimists -- they don't expect it back.   - Half the people you know are below average.   - 99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name.   - 82.7% of all statistics are made up on the spot.   - A conscience is what hurts when all your other parts feel so good.   - A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory.   - If you want the rainbow, you have got to put up with the rain.   - All those who believe in psycho kinesis,...

“Winter Doldrums”             We make it through December because of the holiday season and the coming of the new year; but then comes January and February and the ice and snow and sub-freezing temperatures with barren trees and brown grass and short days with little sunshine.             So now more than ever you need to look for “sunshine”.  When paying a bill be glad you have the money and be glad you have a job or income to pay it; Associate with positive people, go out to lunch or just a cup of coffee with them; find a reason to have a good laugh – play with a pet or a child. Watch a really funny movie – If you do these things you will soon feel better.             I make it a point to laugh often every day!   Don HessRE/MAX ASSOCIATES OF LANCASTER2421 Willow Street PikeWillow S...

Okay Folks this month’s recipe is one of my favorites: Potato Soup!       4 cups potatoes (sliced or diced), 1 stalk of celery (diced), 1 tbsp. onion (minced), 1-1/2 tsp. salt,   2 cups hot water, 2 tbsp. butter or margarine, 1 tbsp. flour, 1 can cream of celery soup,   2 cans milk (or more for thinner soup), 2 tbsp. fresh parsley (chopped), 1 hard boiled egg (chopped)       Brown onion in butter.   Add flour, blend well. Add potatoes, carrots, salt and water.   Cover and cook until vegetables are tender.   Blend cream of celery soup with the milk and heat. Add to cooked ingredients.   (You may wish to use 3 or 4 strokes with a potato masher before adding soup. This makes the soup creamier.)   Garnish with fresh parsley and hard boiled egg.   If you wish to thicken add instant mash...

Give care   If all you care about is what’s in it for you, there won’t be much in it for you.   If all you care about is what other people think of you, people won’t think very highly of you.   What you care about has a powerful impact on the way your life unfolds.   So instead of caring so much about what you think you need, put your energy into caring for all that you have.   You have life, and great possibilities, and other people with whom to enjoy it all.   You have a universe filled with beauty and wonder, and the opportunity to create new meaning and value.   Give loving care, attention, gratitude and support to the abundance with which your world is filled.   Take good care of the good things, and they will grow even more beneficial.   Give care, focused thought, attention an...

“Roadblocks”   In our efforts to find success we will all encounter “roadblocks,” things that block us or get in our way as we move forward. Know that you always have options if you stay positive…you can go over them, under them, around them or just get stubborn and go THROUGH them. To do this you must remain positive every day. Cautiously positive, in other words realistic. As an example: even if I want to be an NFL quarterback nothing I can do will get me there. So my goals must be realistic. Believe in yourself and exude confidence. Get out of your comfort zone and do those things you hate to do and do them first every day. And, finally, discard all negative thoughts the instant they find their way into your mind.   Bring on the “Roadblocks” we are now ready to destroy them today....

November 8th and 9th is the 22nd annual Southern End Community Association auction and benefit dinner. The event will be held at the Hoffman building at 172 South Lime Street in Quarryville. Thursday evening there will be a spaghetti dinner from 5-7 pm served by the Solanco High School post prom committee. The auction will then start at 6 pm and consist of mostly gift certificates.  November 9th and 9am the auction will resume. Donations are currently being accepted for the auction up until the day of the auction.  SECA says this year they need the funds from the auction more than ever due to low revenue from the public pool over the summer. Due to a very rainy summer, pool revenue was lower than normal and currently needs some costly repairs. SECA serves 5 municipalities by providing t...

Library Friends Slate Book Sale   It's book sale time at the Quarryville Pa Library at 357 Buck Road. Sponsored by the “Friends of the Quarryville Library” the volunteers have been working on Tuesday and Thursday mornings sorting books in preparation for the annual fall event.
