The Breakers Newport RI in Grand Style RI Real Estate  To spend some time viewing the Newport RI grand mansions such as the Breakers is what Rhode Island real estate is all about and then some.  I had the pleasure to do this recently with a fellow ActiveRainer, Janis Borgueta, as we toured Newport in its amazing over the top hey day. Hard to believe this majestic summer 'cottage' for Cornelius Vanderbilt was build in 2 years...Really!  With over 2000 workers putting the mansion pieces together in this massive opulent home.  Set on waterfront RI acreage, it is just mind boggling to view and understand how this titan of the railroads made his mark in history. The front gate to the Breakers was this massive iron gate that just was about 30 feet tall and an architectural marvel...the home ...

Did you know that most WWII torpedos were made on Goat Island? Since the Revolutionary War, the United States Navy has played an important role on Narragansett Bay.  At that time, the Bay was used as a haven for the Continental Navy.  During the Civil War, the U.S. Naval Academy was moved from Annapolis to Newport, where it stayed for four years.  In 1869, the Secretary of the Navy authorized the development of an experimental torpedo station on Newport's Goat Island.  During World War II, the station reached the height of importance when over 13,000 people were employed 24 hours a day manufacturing 80% of America's torpedos used during that war.  It closed in 1951, and Goat Island was transferred to the city of Newport where today it includes a luxury hotel and restaurant, arine, shopp...

A visit to Newport, Rhode Island is not complete without a visit to The Breakers mansion.  The Breakers, named for the breaking Atlantic waves it overlooks, is considered the most elaborate of Newport, Rhode Island's mansions, which were considered "summer cottages" for the wealthy at the turn of the century. Earning a fortune in steamships and railroads, Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) built a family fortune.  His grandson, Cornelius Vanderbilt II, purchased a wooden home called The Breakers in Newport in 1885.  In 1892, a fire destroyed the home and Vanderbilt, a workaholic, was determined to rebuild and make the building as fireproof as possible.  The structure of the building used steel trusses and no wooden parts. He even required that the boiler be located in an under...

Did you know that Newport has more than 300 pre-Revolutionary War era buildings still standing—more than any other city in the United States? Many tourists that visit Newport appreciate the history seen in its many houses and taverns, often taking one of the several guided walking tours to see the properties, but few realize it is the hard work of the Newport Restoration Foundation that has made it all possible.  The Newport Historical Society collaborates with the Newport Restoration Foundation to run the many tours, with names such as "Rogues and Scoundrels," "Lantern Tour of Colonial Newport," and the "Road to Independence," and both organizations work together as sources of authentic Newport history. The Newport Restoration Foundation ("NRF") was founded in 1968 by the infamous Dori...

But did you know that it is 3.5 miles long?  Most visitors to Newport have walked its "Cliff Walk," but how much did they really learn about it?  Cliffwalk, in 1965, was designated the first New England a National Recreation Trail and runs from the east end of Bailey's Beach (locally known as "Rejects Beach," itself a best-kept Newporter's secret) to the western end of First Beach.  This designation is given to trails that contribute to health, conservation, and recreation goals in the U.S.  It is administered by the National Park Service and the United States Forest Service. Public access points to Cliff Walk are also located at Bellevue Avenue, Ledge Road, Marine Avenue (where there is a small natural beach used by surfers during hurricanes to launch their boards off the "Breakers"), ...

What is the easiest project to spruce up your home? Being a busy realtor in Newport County, Rhode Island, I have an opportunity to see the inside of many homes - many that seem  a bit tired after a few weeks indoors from the cold.  Luckily, there are several changes homeowners and renters can make to their indoor space to brighten things up.  You will begin to feel as if Spring is right around the corner. Perhaps one of the easiest changes to make is simply to rearrange the furniture.  It can make your home or apartment look like brand-new space by changing the flow, and reducing the clutter.  Since during the winter months we are indoors much more, you may want to move that favorite chair to a brighter location.  Toss some cozy blankets on your couch with a few throw pillows for a chan...

Does Newport, Rhode Island have a connection to Egyptian tombs?   Many people don't realize that one of the most famous Egyptologists of his time was Theodore Montgomery Davis, who developed his passion while in semi-retirement and living in Newport, Rhode Island.  Davis is buried at Newport's Island Cemetary, but during his lifetime - over the course of 12 years - Davis discovered 30 Egyptian tombs.  Many of the found treasures are now housed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Egyptian Museum in Cairo and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.  After each discovery, Davis would pen a book about his find.  While his discoveries were overshadowed by the discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 by Howard Carter (whom Davis had worked with), they are still substantial. Davis bui...

Take a moment to read about how to decorate your Newport, Rhode Island home for the holidays.  Holiday decorating can be a fun family event and what better way to make your home look warm and inviting than to add holiday lights and accents.  As temperatures lower during December, take advantage of the season by mixing up some hot chocolate and decorating any trees you may have in your front yard.  Wrap lights around the trees in solid colors such as green, white or red.  Add a nautical theme to your outside décor by hanging seashells on the trees for added effect.  Large ribbons of silver, gold or glittering colors can be wrapped around the trees.  Lights can also be added around entranceways for an inviting look filled with the warmth of the season.  If you have a path to your home, li...

The Victorian Ladies Inn located at 63 Memorial Boulevard in Newport, Rhode Island is one of the most beautiful Inn's I have ever stayed in. The Inn was Built in 1851 and the main inn houses the parlor, dining room and five guest rooms.  The carriage house consists of four , two with private balcony or courtyard.  The balcony of the Victorian room where I stayed opens to a beautiful tranquil garden.  The Annandale cottage has two guest rooms, accessible by an exterior stairwell. The Inn's owner Cheryl and the manager Betty Jo could not have been more welcoming and informative about the town.   The breakfasts on both morning of my stay was just delicious.  All in all it was a wonderful experience and I could not recommend the Victorian Ladies Inn more.

After leaving New York - Our next stop was Newport, Rhode Island. By the turn of the 20th century, many of the nation's wealthiest families were summering in Newport, in their gorgeous "cottages", such  asThe Breakers, Belcourt Castle, The Elms, Marble House and Rosecliff.  The Astors and the Vanderbilts came for a brief social season  and to escapte they heat, and entertained in these grand, gilded mansions with elaborate receiving, dining, music and ballrooms, but strangely enough with few bedrooms, since the guests were expected to have cottages of their own! :-) The social scene at Newport is described in one of my favorite books, Edith Wharton's the Age of Innocence. With an amazing coastline Newport harbor is filled with all sorts of boats and is known s the sailing capital of the...
