S.C. Senate passes tax break for second homes & commercial real estate Associated Press Tuesday, February 9, 2010 COLUMBIA — People with second homes, rental or commercial property will get a tax break under legislation that won approval in the Senate in South Carolina. Tonight’s voice vote approved a compromise that softens the tax bill for property an owner doesn’t live in. Final approval on Wednesday sends the measure back to the House. Backers said the legislation was needed to invigorate the commercial property market. For an investment property owner, it means a home they paid $100,000 for and that sells for $200,000 will continue to be taxed at its original $100,000 value. Whaley's has re-opened after a couple of weeks for a re-model. The renovation included all new tables and booths.  They removed the pool table and games.  In the old game room there are six new booths and about six new tables.  The stage has been moved to the other side of the front door.  The bathrooms have been completely re-done, top to bottom.   With warm weather coming Whaley's will be the local hang-out of choice for happy hour.  Van has re-done the menus and has new daily specials. Anyone who knows me can attest that I am a huge history "buff".  I have always collected anything old.  Of course it all started with knives as a child like any southern country boy.  My grandfather gave me my first one and I bet I have over 100 now.  Not long after I got that first knife the same grandfather taught me how to mark corners on farms and read old surveys.  I learned about chains and poles.  And how to make a witness.  All of this was educational but what really got me was how beautiful some of the old plats were.  I started keeping a lot of them as a teenager.  That was about the time my father bought his beach house on Edisto.  So I started searching for old Edisto plats.  They were not very easy to find back then.  With the help of Mr. David Lybrand, Marion Whaley, and M... 01/09/2010

Don't Pay Your Edisto Beach Tax Bill Before read this... Edisto Beach, SC Tax Alert.  I am sure by now that you have heard all the commotion about Colleton County's new tax software. If not, Here is the short reprise of the situation.  Beginning of 2009, the Colleton County Treasurer, and Assessor's office purchased new software to bring the county's into the 21st century. (Way over due in my opinion.) They were told that it would probably take about three months to migrate all the records from the old system to the new an updated version.
