Now that it isn't like Dante's inferno quite so hot anymore, it's fall planting time. I for one, really like The Barn Nursery's tag line: Go play in the yard! It's hard to miss 'The Barn' if you live in Chattanooga. Just in case you've never noticed, it's that big old mess o' plants just off I-24 at the 4th Ave exit. Makes for a nice view from the interstate if you're stuck in traffic going up the Ridge Cut. Anyhoo...I mosey'd on over there a couple of days ago and picked up some pansies to go in my window boxes and some other stuff to replace the container plants that I gave up on the heat killed a few weeks ago. Ferger place was the first gated community south of the Mason Dixson line. But it wasn't gated to keep intruders out, unless you consider wandering livestock to be 'intruders.' In 1910, Highland Park & Ferger Place were the 'burbs, farmland even, and the Ferger brothers weren't going to stand for any cows on Morningside or Eveningside Drives. There are no worries about cattle roaming the neighborhood anymore and the gates have long since been taken down but the pillars remain, along with the private park for the benefit of the residents. First things first, I owe the Hamilton County Department of Education an apology. This afternoon, when I got the come-get-your-kid robo-call, I *totally* rolled my eyes. Yeah, right, whatever! was my thought. They were right, I was wrong. So I thought I'd take this opportunity to slip a little flask of vodka in my pocket (for warmth of course!) and take a walk around the neighborhood for some pictures. I live in the Highland Park/Ridgedale area between Missionary Ridge & downtown Chattanooga so seeing some of the quaint old cottages in the snow is a real treat. OK, so that didn't really happen.   The Chattanooga National Cemetery is a beautiful and awe inspiring place. Founded during the Civil War to bury the Union dead who were killed at the Battle for Chattanooga, it is the largest national cemetery in Tennessee. Located on the edge of the Highland Park neighborhood at the corner of Bailey & Holtzclaw Avenues, this is a wonderful place to come to reflect on our nation's history, particularly in the quiet of sunrise, when this photo was taken.
