The Homestead community founded itself during the early and middle thirties as part of a homesteading project. The purpose of this homesteading project was to provide the community of Cumberland County and surrounding areas with employment, and provide 256 families a low cost means of purchasing homes. The Homesteads Tower stands in the center of the Homestead Community as the most eye-catching landmark of Cumberland County. It is constructed of native Crab Orchard Stone and became known as the "Showplace of the New Deal".                                              It was built in 1937-38 and housed the administrative offices, as well as a water tank that held 50,000 gallons of water that was used to serve the whole Homestead Community. The tower is 85 feet tall and has a winding stai...

Homesteads Tower Museum is a very unique experience located right here in Crossville, Tennessee. We have all drove past the unique Homestead stone tower, but have you stopped to take a closer look? The Homesteads are Tennessee's largest Historic District. The Tower was built in the 1930's and now hosts a museum of the homestead way of life and farming in Cumberland county. To overcome the devastating economic effects of the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt began a series of New Deal Programs. There were more than one hundred "Homesteading" projects across America, and this was the largest. Families applied for one of the proposed 250 Homesteads to be constructed. Homesteaders had to meet rigid requirements of high character, ability, honesty and willingness to work and coo...

In the middle of the Homesteads is the Homestead Tower.  It was constructed in 1937-38 to house the goverment administrative offices of the Cumberland Homesteads.  A New Deal sub-sistance homesteading program of the Franklin d. Roosevelt administraion, following the Great Depression. The New Deal provided desperately needed jobs for the community. The building was opened as the museum in 1984 during the community's 50th anniversary celebration.  The structure is a marvel of innovative design and execution.  The octagonal stone tower houses a water tank and a winding stairway leading to a lookot platform at the top.  Most of the original 252 farmsteads can be seen from this vantage point.  Four large rooms at the base of the tower are now used for the museum displays.  There are exhibits...
