Several Dyersburg area churches are offering alternatives to traditional Halloween activities. The church where I attend(West Dyersburg Church of Christ) has an annual event on Halloween(today Oct. 31) called trick or trunk. Many members of the church line their decorated cars up around the parking lot and have their trunks open. They sit near the trunk where they have goodies stashed and the kids(church members and visitors) line up and walk around the parking lot trick or treating. After about 30 minutes of this we close the trunks and head inside the family life center to games and chili and chili dogs. this is a great community outreach and a safe way for the kids to celebrate Halloween. West Dyersburg Church of Christ is located on the corner of Upper finley Road and Highway 51 Byp...

A question that keeps coming up from people is how can I save money and cut back on costs? Of course we can order off the dollar menu at the local fast food restaurants and buy the generic foods at the supermarkets but where else can we save? Here is a link to an article online at the Wall Street Journal talking about the dilema people are facing with their cell phone bills. About 10 months ago I took charge of my overpriced cellphone bill and ended my Verizon contract that had unlimited data, talk and text. All together I was paying about $132 a month. I analyzed my bill and discovered that I was using about 1/2 G of data but paying for unlimited. A guy had just came in my office to discuss renting my office building next door for his prepaid cellphone service business. I spent alot of...

I just had a new Dyersburg real estate website built for me that will make it so much easier for people to search for Dyersburg homes for sale. Our very own Joe Smith here on Activerain built it for me and is now getting it up in the search engines. What I want to do here is share with you how to put a short cut on your home screen of your Droid phone. It will work for several items but I wanted it for a shortcut to my new website. Here is the steps to take to do just that:   Add a Shortcut 1. Press Menu hard key, press + Add, 2. Select Shortcuts. You will be presented with a list of features that can be turned into a shortcut icon on your homescreens for quick access to the particular application or feature. (Applications, Bookmark (internet), Contact, Contact Search, Dialer, Navigatio...

What can you do at night to protect you from tornadoes while you and your family sleep? You can have your smart phone "awakened" by a Ping4 alert. What Ping4 has done is get with the national weather service and provide an alert if bad weather is announced for your local area. This would also alert you if there is imminent danger of wildfires coming your way. Another alert would be an amber alert if a child is kidnapped in your area; it would even provide a picture of the child if that was provided to the authorities. If you live in a coastal area, you can get alerted to severe weather such as a tsunami or hurricane. I think this app is pretty cool. To get this free app just go to the ITunes's market or droid app market.

Are you looking for the Dyersburg homeschooling group? I wrote a blogpost about one of the meeting this group had about three years ago. Over the last 2 weeks I have had 2 calls asking for more information about homeschooling in Dyersburg. My wife has been homeschooling our oldest daughter for the last few years and this year is her last(12th grade). Currently we are not too active in the local homeschool group but if you are looking for them, here is their website. We umbrella under Gateway Christian Schools which means we have to follow their guidelines. We send them grades and courses we are teaching our daughter. Here is a link to their website for more information.

Here is an link of an interview done that has caused an uproar with the liberal media. Read more: http://dailycaller.com/2012/07/18/chick-fil-a-president-gay-marriage-is-inviting-gods-judgment-on-our-nation-audio/#ixzz21lQMlmQ0   Last night our pulpit preacher announced that we will join Gov. Mike Huckabee in showing our support for Chick-fil-A in the stance they have "always taken" in respect to Christian principals and virtues.   If you live in or near Dyersburg,Tn please join with the churches here in support of Mr. Cathy and Chick-fil-A and visit the local restaurant more often than normal and more specifically next Wednesday August 1st. I was in the restaurant today for a late lunch and they told me they have been packed all day.   Next Wednesday August 1st the local churches here ...

Are you looking for Dyersburg cellphone service for much less? Dyersburg's Camelot subdivision is the premiere midrange subdivision in Dyersburg.  The homes are priced anywhere from $110,000 to $155,000(in newest part). This subdivision was started in late 2000 and early 2001. This subdivision is actually the first part of 2 different subdivisions just inside the city limits and just off Upper Finley Road. When new people come to town and want a mid range subdivision that is close to everything including Walmart(5 minutes), this is where I show them homes. Here is a link to the current listings in Camelot including a listing I have at 1040 Sir James. This is the best priced home in the subdivision and the owners are almost packed and ready to relocate.

How do you get rid of honey bees around the outside of your Dyersburg home? Yesterday a renter in one of my management homes in Dyersburg,Tennessee called and said honey bees were swarming around their window air conditioner. I went over there and those bees have set up house keeping inside the back wall. I called a bee expert in Dyersburg named Wayne Rudesill. Actually Wayne is a bee keeper who sells honey for a living. He climbed the ladder with his bee suit on and told me if he could reach the hive he could grab it and put it in a box and take it with him. Unfortunately he could not see or reach the hive so he did the next best thing. He sprayed a can of wasp and hornet spray in the hole where they are going in and out. He told me there is a 50/50 chance they will leave later today....

On my Dyersburg real estate blog I wrote a post about the sales numbers for January 2012. Since then the Dyersburg real estate market has been up and down. In February the Dyersburg numbers sold fell by 27%, In March the number sold verses last year was the same. However in April the sales volume rose from $3,037,501 to $4,542,319  for an increase of 49%. So far in May, I am predicting the sales volume to be down a little from last year. Primarily our market is being driven by short sales and foreclosures. Since the mortgage lenders have redoubled efforts to clear foreclosure inventories we should start seeing a rebound in foreclosures led sales. I believe the Dyersburg real estate market is trying to rebound but it will be a long slow process. There are still some great deals out there...

The Dyersburg Tea Party group met last night at the "Chapel" 2227 Lake Road here in Dyersburg,Tn. I attended the meeting hoping that the group was super organized and ready to help shape the next election. From my observation(only about 8 people there) the group is fairly new and in need of new members. They do however have a website set up complete with bylaws for the group. Here is the link for the Dyersburg tea party website. For your information, the Dyersburg tea party is not really a political party affiliation but a group of conservatives who have come together to look for ways to get other conservatives elected who want to protect our rights under the constitution and stop all the wasteful spending. This group is open to all Republicans, Democrats and independents who want to cha...

Over the last few months, investors and foreclosures have ruled the day with the Dyersburg real estate market. I would say that over 75% of home sales over the last few months have been foreclosures. The average sale time 6 months ago was about 6 months but now when the "priced right" foreclosure hits the market it almost never gets to the investor time period which means owner occupants are coming into the game and buying before the investor can actually bid. Even properties needing lots of work are being purchased by owner occupants. I see this as a great sign that the Dyersburg real estate market is turning. I work with several investors who are disappointed that there are not more great deals available to them. We are seeing a real decrease in the number of Dyersburg foreclosures co...

Dyersburg's Nordyne manufacturing facility has just been recognized by the Tennessee OSHA Commissioner's award of excellence. Nordyne has accumulated 800,000 hours worked without a restricted or lost time injury. Nordyne has also not had any willful safety or health violations. Several other guidelines were also met to earn this award. Nordyne manufactures central heat and air units for homes and manufactured homes. They relocated here to Dyersburg from St. Louis in 2003. We are thank-ful here in Dyersburg for Nordyne coming and employing so many workers. Late last year I replaced my central heat and air unit(5 ton) with a new Nordyne unit and it has worked flawlessly. Here is a link to the complete article.

Ever since I signed up for Verizon for my cell phone plan I have regretted paying that $132 plus change per month. I had the unlimited calling, text and data. I analyzed my usage over the last 4 months and I averaged about 500 MB of data per month. About a month ago a guy came in my real estate office and wanted to rent an apartment. I asked him where he worked and he said Z & H sales which sells Page Plus Cellular prepaid plans. I mentioned I was on Verizon but looking for some relief per month and his eyes lit up. He said, "what about if I can let you use your same verizon phone, keep your same phone number and make and take calls and text and data over the same Verizon cell towers for less than half the month you are paying now would you let me sign you up"? I told him to sign me up ...

Dyersburg,Tennessee has once again been chosen as one of the top micropolitan cities in the United States. I wrote an article a few years ago about Dyersburg being recognized but we did not rank nearly as high. A micropolitan is a rural area where the largest city does not exceed 50,000 in population. Here is an excerpt from the article ion todays State Gazette newspaper: Dyersburg was one of eight micropolitans recognized in the top 100 in Tennessee and was the top micropolitan in west Tennessee. It was listed as second in the state of Tennessee, trailing only Columbia, Tenn., located in central Tennessee, approximately 45 miles south of Nashville. Humboldt was the only other west Tennessee micropolitan recognized in the top 100, placing 80th. It is not the first time that Dyersburg ha...

Did you know there is a program in Tennessee that will help you keep your home out of foreclosure if you qualify under the guidelines. The Keep My Tennessee Home - Tennessee's Hardest Hit Fund program provides loans to unemployed or substantially underemployed homeowners who, through no fault of their own, are financially unable to make their mortgage payments and are in danger of losing their homes to foreclosure. Tennessee is one of 18 states that are receiving Hardest Hit Funds from the federal government. Homeowners who qualify for assistance may receive up to 18 months of monthly mortgage payments and/or funds to pay past due mortgage payments to bring their mortgage current; these funds are paid directly to the loan servicer/lender. Qualifications: Be unemployed or underemployed (...

I want to buy a Dyersburg,Tennessee foreclosure. That seems to be the most common phone call coming into my Dyersburg real estate office these days. Most of them are looking for a foreclosure because they have heard on tv that buying a foreclosure is a great way to get into a house cheaply. What the tv people do not tell you is that a majority of those foreclosures have problems and often times "hidden problems" that will only surface after you buy. When buying a Hud foreclosure there is a inspection report available before you write the offer. Hud hires someone to make the inspection but it is done with the utilities turned off. They use a generator to test the electrical systems and an air compressor to check the plumbing. What does the inspector use to check for a cracked heat chamb...
