Fountain City, Tennessee, is a neighborhood in northern Knoxville, Tennessee, including zip codes 37918 and 37912. The community is named for a large fountain at its center locally referred to as the "Fountain City duck pond".  This neighborhood prides itself on its' history and small town roots.  If you are looking for that older, stately, historic home in pristine neighborhoods on tree lined streets, look no further. Fountain City was originally a separate suburban community from Knoxville, and was the largest unincorporated city in the United States until its annexation by the city of Knoxville in 1962.  Fountain City is bordered to the north by Halls Crossroads and Powell; to the south, Interstate 640 marks the boundary between it and North Knoxville proper. Public schools in Founta...

The Open House has been advertised on the Internet, in the News Sentinel, and in the Fountain City Focus! We put out signs on Wednesday this week, there is going to be a Door Prize! Well, at Least its Raining, people hopefully won't be able to do anything outside today, and its a good day to go to an Open House!! I have lots of Balloons, all different colors, plus the lights are really inviting in the Rain. I'm going to light candles, and bake Brownies, to serve, and of course I'll have tea and water, to drink! Yesterday was a terrrible day in Fountain City near Knoxville, TN. A shooting took place in our local high school less than 1/2 mile from my house. A young man Jamar Siler walked into the commons area and shot Ryan McDonald in the chest with a 22 caliber handgun. Around 10:20 a.m. Ryan was pronounced death at UT medical center. Things things usually happen in other areas. Just several weeks ago a man walked into a church here in Knoxville and shot several people there and now this. These things always always bring about questions of why? Please keep our community in your thoughts and prayers.   Vernon

One of my favorite parts of North Knoxville is the charming little community of Fountain City. From Fountain City Lake (which the locals all call “the Duck Pond”) to Litton’s Restaurant; Fountain City has a style and charm all it’s own. Bordered to the north by Black Oak Ridge and south by Interstate 640, it’s sort of an area where time has definitely slowed down relative to the rest of Knoxville and not in a backwards way. Boasting lots of longtime, multi generational residents, Fountain Citians always seem to have a friendly hello and a smile for both old timers and newcomers alike. Fountain City was voted the best suburban community in Tennessee in 1986 by People magazine, and until 1962 it was the largest unincorporated city in the US with a population of around 30,000. While you’re...

Click on the video above to listen to the song as you enjoy the post! Last week, I posted about the Honor Fountain City Day event that was held today, Memorial Day, 2008 in the Fountain City Park. The event is sponsored locally by Fountain City Town Hall, Inc which works to preserve the history and identity of this beautiful Knoxville, Tennessee suburb. As I said in my previous post, while there are wonderful Memorial Day Events held all around the country to honor the service of America's military, there is hardly anything as sincere and heartwarming as the thousands of small town celebrations. I hope you enjoy these photos from today's festivities! However you celebrated and/or continue to celebrate today, I hope you took a moment to reflect on what the military service of everyone f...

This is my first localism post since relocationg to the metro-Knoxville area! In my short time in the area, I have discovered that there are numerous distinct suburbs and smaller cities that comprise the metro-Knoxville area. These suburbs and smaller towns contribute their own personal flavor to the overall area. One such suburb is Fountain City! Fountain City was annexed by the City of Knoxville in 1962. Unlike many smaller cities which surrender their identity upon annexation, Fountain City has clung to its own identity. In 1972, the non-profit community group Fountain City Town Hall was formed. The mission statement of this group speaks to the it desire to protect and serve the local neighborhoods through active participation, where allowed, in City Council activities, the Metropoli...

Wow, what a weekend. Ohana has had a eventful couple of days including a lock-in, Fall Festival and a concert. I was so proud of many of our students this weekend. Friday night's lock-in allowed us to have a time of fellowship and fun while we set-up the Fall Festival. What can you say about Saturday? All day we had a group of students and adults preparing for out 3:30 start time to our fall festival. At first, we were a little concerned about people showing up. It started a little slow, but then we began to have our "boomer crowd" show up. They brought kids, decorations for their cars, costumes and appetites. (I really want to say I appreciate this group of adults the 40 and 50 somethings very much for their support.) They really know how to party. We put many hours of labor into this ...

It is great to see a hometown boy make it in the bigs! Todd Helton and his team the Colorado Rockies are playing unbelievable baseball. We are very proud of him here in Fountain City, TN.  Other greats have come from our little town, including Tina Wesson the winner of Survival. I hope that Todd and the Rockies go far in the playoffs. He is a nice guy and deserves to be where he is! He is a former high school football/baseball player locally at Central high school. He attended the University of Tennessee as a baseball/football player. He was instrumental in our trip to the college world series. Now later in his career, he is finally getting the opportunity to make a run at the World Series.   If you need a mortgage we have got many options even in this down market.   Vernon Corum ,Jr. ...

Attention Fountain City Residents......This Saturday October 13, 2007 @ 3 p.m. we will have a small carnival with face painting, coloring, games and other activities for the kids. At 5:30 p.m. we will serve the cook off chili. We have already got several award winning chili cooks in the mix. If you think you can beat them, bring your best batch and see. It is all in good fun. At 6:30 or so, we will have trunk or treat in the front of the church for the neighborhood kids. We ask that church members bring a sack of candy and if you want to dress up and give out candy from the trunk of your car. You can decorate your car and be as creative as you like. We want to make this fun for everyone involved. Lastly, we are having a silent auction through out the event. Several businesses have dona...

Recently, I went to the store and bought a $5.00 dollar gallon of milk and then went out and filled up my SUV with $3.00 dollar per gallon gas all the while thinking that it was highway robbery. I thought for a moment, that I could milk my own cow or even ride a bicycle for alot less money.... I got to thinking about how the good ole days were when my wife and I were spending $30.00 per week for groceries and when we bought a house for 8.5% interest in the mid 1990's then 8 years later the house sold for double what we paid for it. We all had it good back then. Everyone shared the wealth..... No one considered it a huge deal to pay realtors fees of 6% or upwards. Nor did they have a problem paying mortgage orginator fees or closing cost for loans. Home inspectors are being ignored. Now...

As I begin to transition into Real Estate, I must work a job to pay the bills until I am established. I spend about ten and a half hours per day working in a paint store in Knoxville, TN. I am in a designer/retail/higher end clientel store where many people come into the store fretting over colors. We offer several options to these type people whether they are building a new home, remodeling, repainting. First of all, new construction clients who are getting custom homes are the most likely the one's who are stressing about matching colors to their personal taste. One way our store can help them is we offer The Voice of color system developed by a designer to ease the stress of choosing colors. The system allows them to take a test and answer questions about their interest and personali...

If you have a WordPress blogging platform and share my recent frustrations at trying to embed a YouTube video, there is a very quick and simple solution I found at Jack Humphrey.com The problem occurs because WordPress, like several blogging platforms, uses a WYSIWYG (whizzygig) or "What You See Is What You Get" editor for writing posts. Apparently the WordPress version of WYSIWYG doesn't like to embed things very well because all my attempts were coming out blank or scrambled. Here's the solution; there is a check box on your WordPress blog that turns off your WYSIWYG editor and lets you simple paste the embed code into the entry or post box. Log into your Word Press blogClick the "Users" link just to the right of top center.Scroll to the bottom and uncheck this block: Use the visual r...

Most all my life I've been a positive, upbeat person; you could say I always see my proverbial glass of water as half full (an optimist) versus someone whose same glass of water appears half empty to them (a pessimist). Now it appears that you can train yourself to be happy. A former French biochemist turned Buddhist Monk says he has taught himself to be happy"Now Matthieu Ricard, 60, a French academic-turned-Buddhist monk, is to share his secrets to make the world a happier place. The trick, he reckons, is to put some effort into it. In essence, happiness is a "skill" to be learned."Cool, where do I sign up?Mr. Ricard apparently makes himself happy by meditating, managing his thoughts, and how he perceives the world. He was a canditate for a PhD in biochemistry in the 60s but chucked i...
