The Bureau of Economic Analysis reported on Friday that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew by 1.2% in the second quarter of 2016, below the 2.6% expected. The weak reading was due in part to a big fall in inventories. In addition, the first quarter final reading was revised lower to 0.8% from 1.1%. However, consumer spending rose 4.2% in the quarter, the best gain since late 2014. Consumer spending accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic activity.
