Barton Hills is one of my favorite neighborhoods in Austin, Tx. It has so many things going for it. It's close to Zilker Park. It's near some of my favorite restaurants - especially Uchi, Olivia's and now Torchy's Tacos mmmmm. Sorry Taco Deli, I have been cheating on you with Torchy's!  In addition to how close it is to everything cool, hip and South Austin, it's just a 5-minute drive to downtown. It's just got a cool laid-back vibe that's hard to explain. Our neighbors include people that have lived there since the 1950s when the subdivision was built to professional couples with young children who want to sent their kids to the excellent public elementary school Barton Hills Elementary School. The Statesman is reporting that nine Austin schools may face closure starting as early as 2012. In amongst the 9 Austin schools "informally" recommended by AISD's facilities task force for closure , 2 gems of 78704 - Zilker & Barton Hills Elementary - have been named.  Public (and I'm sure, heated) forums are scheduled for later in the week in advance of formal recommendations from the task force. Obviously, this is an issue that affects all of us who have chosen to raise children in Central Austin, as all 9 schools potentially up for closure are within the urban core.  Nothing against those residents who prefer a more suburban lifestyle, but this does seem at odds with the city's push for more density in & around downtown.
