RE/MAX Ballunar Festival in Clear Lake The RE/MAX Ballunar Festival has become one of the largest balloon events in the United States.  It’s an event that folks all around the Clear Lake and Bay Area look forward to every year. Held at the NASA/Johnson Space Center each October, this event is quite the success!  In addition to the skies being littered with dozens of drifting hot air balloons, there are skydiving and other aerial sport events and demonstrations as well.  The event kicks off with a Saturday sunrise mass launch from all around the Johnson Space Center, Webster, and League City areas.  The aeronauts converge on the Space Center and rendezvous there in landings all over Rocket Park.  Saturday evenings, near dusk, a balloon glow is featured.  It’s really a sight to see! Even though the shuttle program has ended, and NASA has let many of its shuttle employees go, Space Center Houston is still going strong. As the official visitor center for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, Space Center Houston provides an “out of this world journey through human adventures in space.”   Space Center Houston features many permanent exhibits, attractions, theaters and traveling exhibits. There are hands-on activities for kids, and historical exhibits that are interesting to all ages. My favorite exhibit is the Apollo program section where the moon rocks are displayed. The end of the space shuttle program has been an emotional time for Houstonians who have celebrated the successes and mourned the losses of the shuttle missions over the years. The Clear Lake area community has been front and center during the history of the space program.   To honor the shuttle program and what it has meant to the Clear Lake community, The University of Houston at Clear Lake (UHCL) will host a reception for the opening of a NASA photographic exhibition on Aug. 23 from 5-7 p.m. on the UHCL campus.
