If you want to know what got me thinking about magnets, which was the topic of my recent post, "We Are Magnets... Do You Attract or Repel?", here's the answer: A well-crafted and inspiring commercial is rare, but one from several years back is at the top of my list. It is "Magnet", a Nike commercial featuring Lance Armstrong. As Lance travels the roads of America, the animate world around is drawn to his heroic figure as he peddles across the landscape: By our love and good example, we can be a magnet every day.

BATTLE FOR EL CAMINO REAL March 4-6, 2011   Are you a history buff; a seamstress inspired by period clothing; a veteran who enjoys watching others march around for a change; a teacher or homeschooling parent with a class full of kids who would rather learn history from sight and sound than from a mute textbook page; or, just someone who enjoys learning about our nation's past?       Set aside some time this weekend to attend the civil war reenactment in Madisonville, TX! The "Battle for El Camino Real" will feature Union and Confederate cavalry, infantry, and artillery in pitched battle as they struggle to claim the day and secure a vital supply roadway. Before and after the battle, visit the campsite and discover how soldiers spent their moments of peace.   Historical Note: While no C...

This morning my wife and I peered out our window at a brilliant white landscape. About an inch of snow fell overnight (and is now quickly melting). A rare treat for Madisonville! I’ve combined photos and video into this YouTube feature: Our winter weather in Madisonville TX is generally mild. Snowfalls are rare -- once or twice a year -- and the precipitation doesn’t usually exceed 3 inches. Just enough to enjoy it for a day and then return to the usual gray winter scene that awaits the arrival of our early Texas spring time. I’m ready for the warm weather again! About those dog boots... Patti Mae, my labrador retriever, is 11 years old; I've had her since she was 8 weeks! She's a great companion with a gentle nature. Unfortunately, age is beginning to take its toll on Patti. She has a...

Built as a hotel in 1904, the Victorian-style Woodbine Hotel and Restaurant in Madisonville, Texas is a historical landmark and an active local business. The Woodbine staff provide some of the tastiest food in town, and their hotel accommodations are also uniquely suited for visiting tourists. I especially enjoy visiting them for a weekday lunch with my wife! Learn more about the Woodbine at http://woodbinehotel.com/ I attended a community meeting at the Woodbine this week and snapped this photo of their private party room: _ . - . _ After receiving an e-mail from the Madison County Chamber of Commerce regarding the newly organized C.H.A.R.M. - Citizens Helping to Achieve a Revitalization of Madisonville - I decided to attend the organization's 1st meeting this past Tuesday. The weather this week has taken a refreshing turn toward autumn! It's 4:45 p.m., and the current (low-humidity) temperature is 78 degrees. Yesterday was just as pleasant, so my wife and I spent the evening playing tennis with family at the local Madisonville high school tennis courts. This month I've been coordinating several property closings, three of which will likely occur this week. Every closing can encounter last minute obstacles, but I try to avoid these surprises by accurately preparing the sales contract, guiding the buyer and seller through their contractual responsibilities, and working closely with all of the service providers involved in closing the deal. (That last part requires daily phone calls and e-mails!) My time has also been spent building my online presence at Tru...

Mark your calendars! The annual Texas Mushroom Festival is scheduled for the weekend of Saturday, October 23rd. Dubbed the “Mushroom Capital of Texas” by the State legislature in 2005, Madisonville is home to a large Monterey Mushroom farm that produces nearly 28 million pounds of mushrooms per year. Recognizing the importance of this industry in the life and employment of the community, Madisonville held its first Mushroom Festival in 2003, and the event has grown and flourished ever since. With attractions ranging from a sumptuous steak & mushroom dinner, arts & crafts vendors, antique car show, 5k run/walk, photo contest, and more, the festival has something for everyone. It's a great opportunity to soak up some sunshine in the mild October air while browsing the many displays and sh...

(This post will appear on my website as a separate page "Information & Resources" under the "Community Information" menu on the left.) Madisonville, Texas is a bustling rural city at the intersection of Interstate 45 and State Highway 21. The community both past and present has uniquely benefited its residents and the state at large through its strongly agricultural way of life and business, with an estimated 244,524 acres of Madison County devoted to farm and ranch activities in 2002. With its prime location 1 1/2 hours from Houston, 2 hours from Dallas, and 45 minutes from Bryan/College Station (home of Texas A&M University), visitors and residents find that Madisonville is a pleasantly rural locale from which to access the arts, culture, education, and commerce of the nearby big citi...

My wife and I have discovered a great source for authentic Mexican made pottery just up the road in Madisonville.  Lone Star Pottery has two great locations in Madisonville...one on the downtown square, and one at the intersection of Hwy 21 and I45.  At either location you will find a great selection of ornamental outdoor pottery, fountains, and chimineas, as well as smaller decorative pottery and gift items.  We recently purchased a chiminea and two large outdoor pots and have been very pleased with both the quality of their items and the competitive prices.  We have really enjoyed our chiminea...if you've never owned one, let me recommend that you pick one up.  These awesome "mini fireplaces" are very relaxing to sit around in the evening...they're great stress relievers!  Next time ...
