October is national Fire Safety month. In 1871, the Great Chicago Fire raged for 3 days over the period of time between October 8th through the 10th. Usually, the thought of changing voter registration information is very far removed from more pressing and urgent matters, but it's important to complete this update.In Dallas County, it's easy to become qualified as a Voter Deputized Registrar (VDR). You can take a short class in person, or via Zoom. Last week, I Zoomed into getting my VDR credentials again. The credentials expire on December 31st of every even-numbered year, so I'm now re-upped until the end of 2024.In the last VDR cycle (2021-2022), there were 3098 VDRs in Dallas County. Yesterday I received a summons for jury duty. In the past, I have served on both a criminal and civil cases in Dallas County, but it's been a while.  This summons is for a Justice of the Peace (JP) court.  And it's for "standby" service. And it's for a 2 week block of time!What to do? What to do? I'm eligible to take a permanent exemption for being old. But should I? I asked for input from my Facebook friends and have arrived at the following conclusion after reading their advice: If I were in court, I'd want someone like me on the jury.
