This is a great time of the year to visit Southern Utah in general and Cedar City in particular. The days are generally warm and bright, and the evening can cool down quite a bit.  The fall colors have yet to arrive in all their glory.  In all it is very beautiful time of year. We may not get the notoriety for our fall colors, but with the crisp, blue skies and red rock as a background, it is a beautiful canvass none the less.  These are some stock photos that I have found to show what is coming in the next few weeks.  It promises to be absolutely stunning.  I will take my camera out when the burst forth with all their glory.  Come up and see why we love living here!  While you're at it, it is a great place to retire in, or to buy a second home.  We have a tremendous inventory of homes ...

The Utah Association of Realtors Convention kicked off today in beautiful Midway, Utah.  Midway is near Park City, Utah.  It is in one of the most beautiful places on this earth!  Darcy, as a member of our Board of Realtors left this afternoon to attend the bulk of the Convention.  I stayed home, it sort of sucks, but with a child in school, we felt that it was best that she not miss that much school. The Convention is being held at the beautiful Zermatt Resort and Spa: This is a photograph from the UAR web site of the resort.  It is beautiful!  I can't wait until Friday when I go up!  We have never attended a convention prior to this year.  They have normally been held out of state, in either Sun Valley Idaho, or San Diego.  Don't get me wrong, I love both areas, but by the time you tr...

This past Saturday, September 6th, the Rotary Club in Cedar City dedicated the Memorial for those that served our country during the Vietnam War.  The memorial is located at the Rotary Centennial Veterans Park in Cedar City.  This is located on the East side of the T intersection of 200 North and 200 East and joins a beautiful Monument to the 222nd Field Artillary Unit of the National Guard that served in Iraq.  There are further plans to create memorials to those that served in other wars. There are many photographs of the Vietnam War Memorial that can be found at the local newspaper web site www.thespectrum.com.  I have been passed and am glad to say that there were enough visitors that it would have made it difficult to take pictures for posting here.  This is just another great oppo...

I learned an important lesson today, be like the Boy Scouts and Be Prepared!  I got a call from another agent in our office who was busy with someone else to show a town home in a project that he is marketing.  Like a fool, I chose to rush over to the model to show the clients rather than keep the clients waiting, instead of taking 5 or 10 minutes to look up as much information on the project prior to leaving the office. I showed the clients the model, and of course, they had questions that I hadn't bothered to look up.  The good thing is, that they understood, they hadn't made an appointment, and were really good.  The other good thing is that I learned my lesson.  The next time another agent in the office calls like that, I am going to take a few minutes and familarize myself better w...

This evening our office had our annual Corn Roast.  This is a get together that we do every year about this time.  It started with one of our retired agents sharing the corn that he grew in his large garden with the rest of us.  I am not sure how long this has been a tradition, the office has done it for at least 7 years that I know of.  Now the agent doesn't grow as large a garden so it has really evolved into a pot luck. The office supplies the main dish, this year it was hamburgers and hot dogs and the corn.  Then the rest of us bring side dishes, salads and deserts.  It is a great time to get together and get to know each other outside of the office.  It promotes, in my opinion, a great working environment.  I noticed a blog about another office doing this over the Labor Day Weekend...

I don't know whether anyone did any posts on this show this morning or not.  I wasn't able to find anything about it.  Last night Darcy and I caught the last 10 items that HGTV had for the biggest mistakes that a buyer or seller can make in Real Estate.  #13 is not hiring an Agent.  It is a very good reference, at least what we saw of it.  I looked it up on the HGTV.com web site and it will be rebroadcast on Sept. 21st at 5:00 pm ET/PT.  Like I said we found it informative and if you have a difficult buyer or seller it may be worth having them hear and see it coming from someone other than yourselves.  They have inspectors, financial advisors, stagers, and Realtors going through these mistakes.  If you can't wait that long, for the rebroadcast, I found a printed list by going through th...

Well it's the last big weekend of the summer.  How many of you are travelling?  Ok, How many are planning on working?  It should be a great weekend to do both.  We are staying home and doing a little work.  The long weekends in an area like ours is usually a good opportunity to come into contact with people looking to relocate or buy a second home.  Each market is different, and I have heard that some areas Holiday weekends aren't great weekends to find new buyers. I only know our market area, and it is usually pretty active.  The great thing about Iron County and Cedar City, is that there are generally a lot of great activities going on for the entire family.  I have already blogged about the County Fair in Parowan.  This is a great opportunity to enjoy the beautiful scenery in the sur...

Earlier tonight I was catching up on the Sports scores on ESPN.com, I found this story about a 9 year old pitcher that was banned from pitching because he is too good.  How ridiculous is that!  The league reported told the boy and his coach that he could play anywhere that he wanted except pitcher, a day or so after the ban the boys coach put him in to pitch and the other team forfeited the game, they just quit and walked off the field. What is this league teaching these children?  It can't be that excelling in something is a good thing.  It also can't be that to be the best you can be, you need to compete against the best that you can find.  This young man wasn't banned because he pitched wildly and hurt kids, he was banned because they couldn't hit the ball when he pitched.  I wonder ...

I just finished reading The Millionaire Real Estate Agent, by Gary Keller with Dave Jenks and Jay Papasan.  I found it very informational.  In fact I read the entire book in 4 sittings.  I plan to re-read it soon.  I am not a Keller Williams agent, but I found his enthusiasm and ideas very appealing.  His advice to elevate your performance not just your income was insightful and very well done. I highly recommend reading this book to anyone that wants to become a better Realtor, even if your goal isn't to make yourself into a million dollar producer, his advice on education and standards of performance, especially when it comes to team building and hiring assistants.  I highly enjoyed the book and will be reading it's pages again and soon!

I usually browse the MSN homepage on my way to check the scores and see what Brittany has done today.  This one caught my attention: "College administrators believe that lowering the drinking age would teach the kids moderation and lessen the chance of the "binge" drinking that is prevalent on most college campuses."  On the surface, I would normally say in reply that aren't there a far more pressing issues facing our Universities and Colleges around the country than this?  I am fairly conservative, and I honestly wish that the DUI laws would be strengthened and punishments much more severe.  I understand why the heads of the Universities want to make some changes to help our young people learn that alcohol when abused, is a serious thing.  All this being said, I still struggle with th...

At our monthly board luncheon this afternoon a new President Elect, Treasurer and 3 members of the Board of Directors were chosen.  Our New President Elect is Chris Dahlin, continuing as Treasurer is Heather Roundy, also continuing as a director is Darcy Cannon.  Kay Carter and Heather Richman were also voted in as new Directors on our Board.  Congradulations to each of them!  In a unique twist, it is a first (at least that I know of in our Board) Chris Dahlin is an Appraiser and not a Realtor.  He has been actively serving in many different capacities in our Board for a number of years. It is great to be in a Board like ours where everyone that has a stake in the Real Estate industry has the opportunity to belong to our Board of Realtors.  We have mortgage people, Title and Escrow peop...

Thursday the day that parents look forward to and causes children dread.  It's the first day of school!  Why Thursday is the first day of school, I don't know.  I would have started on a Monday, but that's just me. Those with much higher degrees than I have decided to start on Thursday, so that is ok!  I know that our High School Senior is not happy to see it come.                                                       This brings a another whole set of safety issues, so please be careful and watch the crosswalks and bus stops, when ever it is that school starts in your area!

I am reading the 8th Habit by Stephen R. Covey.  I have less that 80 pages until I have finished reading it.  I have read a lot of his other books.  I love the 7 Habits book, and have tried to incorporate some of it into my life and business.  The 8th Habit is really more about being a leader, but the sections that I have been devouring have been where he talks about listening, and communicating.  I believe that if I can learn to use some of what he is teaching, I will work so much better with sellers and buyers, and be more successful in my business. I really do recommend most of Covey's books to those that are looking to improve their lives and businesses.  I still try to manage my time based on the principles in the 7 Habits book.  Great reads both of them along with the Principled C...

For just over a year Darcy and I have been sending a monthly newsletter to all of our past clients.  It has been a great success.  We have one deal that is closing in the next few days due only to the newsletter.  The newsletter that we use is one that we get from Prospects Plus.  It allows us to feature a property each month in our newsletter.  One past property management client of Darcy's noticed a listing for some land that another past and now present client had relisted through us. The long and short is that a deal was reached and should close soon.  What really got me thinking about the effectiveness of the newsletter occurred today.  Another past client called Darcy today to let her know that they had moved from where they had been living out of state to another city in that sam...

Summertime is the traditional time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors.  Here in Cedar City we are situation next to some of the most beautiful mountains imaginable.  Of course that is just our humble opinion.  I just want to add my voice to the throngs of other voices in wishing everyone that chooses to enjoy the outdoors to do so responsibly!                                                          That means watching your fire use.  We have all seen the devastation in California and other places due to fires that have burned out of control.  Currently we are so dry that the Forest Service has relegated fires into approved fire pits only.  Even if you are using an approved fire pit make sure that you are safe.  Keep a bucket of water or dirt nearby to throw on any fire that might ...

Although he is an owner of a competing company I felt it necessary to acknowledge the work of a fellow Realtor outside of the relm of real estate.  The Owner of Coldwell Banker Advantage, Dan Roberts was recognized by the Mayor of Cedar City for his outstanding volunteerism in the community.  Dan has recently been the chairman of the Korean War Memorial at our Vetrans Park.  He was recognized for this and various other areas that he has worked in our community.  Dan is a retired Colonel from the US Army.  It is always a good thing when Realtors step up and lead out in our communities.  As a resident of Cedar City I thank Dan Roberts for his service to us here.  As an American I thank Dan and other Veterans of the Military Services.  Here is the link to the Mayor's Message:http://www.ced...

Here in Utah we have our Pioneer Days Celebrations upcoming.  In Salt Lake City the event is called the Days of '47.  Here in Cedar City on July 24th we will have a parade on Main Street between 400 South and 200 North at 10AM.  There will be activities at the Main Street City Park following the Parade.  The Main Street Park is located at the corner of 200 North and Main.  The parade is a lot of fun as church groups and neighborhoods build floats and have other entries for the parade.  It is a great small town parade. The Pioneer Days Celebration is akin to other States' Founders Days.  It commemorates the entry of the Pioneers into the Salt Lake Valley on July 24, 1847.  Most small cities and towns will have similar celebrations to Cedar City's.  It is great fun, there won't be firewor...

I had in mind to write a blog about the pessimistic predicitons on the economy.  Then I decided to be positive instead.  We at our board luncheon last week learned that at Wells Fargo mortgage loan applications had risen 7% over the previous month.  We are getting more traffic on our web site and calls on our signs and houses.  In our office more agents are showing homes to qualified buyers and more offers are being submitted. The Home Run Derby last night offered some amazing shots.  Hamilton hit a couple that looked like they had a chance of going out of Yankee Stadium.  The Rays with a payroll somewhere around A Rod and Manny Ramirez combined is a half a game out of first place.  The Cubs have a good chance of having enough Pitching and defense to go to the World Series.  I was thin...

Darcy began her Brokers Licensing classes last week.  She is trying a new program for our state, she goes to 2 8 hour classes at the first of the class session.  Then she does the majority of the work on the Internet with a text book that was provided.  She really seems to enjoy the freedom that this allows her.  She is excited to get her Brokers License even though she will just be an Associate Broker at our office. We love our Broker and our office. We have no plans currently to open our own Agency. I really hope that this "new" method of taking classes "takes off"  in today's market it is difficult to take the 120 hours that the state of Utah requires for the Brokers Licensing classes.  Anyway it is just something that is going on with us.  We hope that the rest of you have a great M...
