Emigration Canyon is home to six of the best condo communities in the Salt Lake Valley. There are six major condominium communities near the mouth of Emigration Canyon, just up the road from Hogle Zoo. These are all located on either Donner Way or Kennedy Drive and all are within a quarter mile of each other. I'm going to list each community in order of how well I, personally, like it. #1 - Bench Tower Condos Why I like it: Bench Tower is the complete package. Utah Latin Expo provides a cultural immersion I could get it all at once at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City UT, examples of Latin food, entertainment and industry - Utah businesses showing off their ethnic leanings. It's on this weekend in Hall 4 of the Salt Palace (Temple Square station for TRAX blue and green lines). I felt really welcomed during my early visit. Vendors eager to chat, very willing to display their wares, precise in their messages. Organizers had decided to to present in English, with stands having Spanish and Portuguese speakers available. A great afternoon of listening, chatting, sampling. I was invited to football, car events, prospecting outings for gold, lunches. Danny Quintana, a lawyer/author, when signing his book Caught in the Middle for me, invited me to jo...

I'm sure many of you have a Facbook Fan Page.  I have one that I started a little over a year ago. I seem to let certainl things fall to the side as I get busier throughout the year.  Facebook and Active Rain unfortunately are not immune to that. I've made a commitment to myself this year to keep all of my online marketing activities going throughout the year regardless of how busy I am. I'm trying out a contest on my Facebook page to get some traffic there.  I'm running it for one month and I will report back my findings after it's over. Feel free to go to my page, enter the contest and share, share, share. https://www.facebook.com/mtwosolutions

Sugarhouse has long been one of Salt Lake's most popular neighborhoods. Many people I talk to don't seem to understand the appeal of Sugarhouse, I mean, the houses are old, prices are high, and the people are weird. So what is the appeal? Here are 6 reasons why people move to Sugarhouse. 1. The housesYes, the houses are old, but many of them have been well updated and are very classic. When people say "they don't build them like they used to", they mean it. Houses built today will crumble to the ground long before the old houses in Sugarhouse do. 2. The cultureSugarhouse is known for being upbeat, eco friendly, neighborly, and community oriented, among other things. If you are looking for this type of culture, you will want to take a look in Sugarhouse. 3. The locationSugarhouse is clos...

I visited the Broadway Centre Cinemas for the first time on the weekend and felt like it was worthy of a blog - I just want to share with you what a great experience it was. It brought me back to when I was a teenager - when movie theaters where still sort of quaint and cozy (definitely didn't feel quaint at the time!). Walking into the Broadway Centre Cinemas (located at 111 E Broadway in Downtown Salt Lake City) you're greeted by a very humble entrance. Nothing fancy, no arcade game area, no computer screen to choose your seats... just an old fashioned ticket booth. Once you get through the doors, (I  think this was my favorite part... seriously) - a sweet little lady who is sitting in a chair greets you to take your ticket. How cute is that?? Loved it. Once in, you're tempted by an ...

Buildable lots in Salt Lake City are not easy to find these days. It seems like just about everything in the city has already been developed. Surprisingly, though, there are still more building lots available than you might think and the prices are reasonable (depending on what your expectations are). Emigration Canyon, which is part of Salt Lake City, has many building lots available and is a nice place to live if you want to be out of the inversion but still close to Downtown SLC. Sugarhouse still has a number of buildable lots for sale at any given time as does the Avenues. Check out this list of every buildable lot for sale in Salt Lake City. This is a good place to start if you are looking to buy one. Also, if you are wondering how to go about building a new house on an existing lo...

Poking around Salt Lake City Utah Much as you might know Australia for its Opera House and Bridge on Sydney Harbour, or Ayer's Rock (Ulurhu) as its iconic center, similarly you might recognize Salt Lake City UT from its Christmas lights on Temple Square, Mormon Tabernacle Choir or as a Mecca for winter sports in "The Greatest Snow on Earth". If you stop there in comparison and content of either example, then you might have missed much. I suggest both places as I am an Australian who has made his latter day home in Salt Lake City Utah. I am both adventurous and curious: I live in hope of these attributes rubbing off, Mate. I have enjoed seven years of poking around Salt Lake City and its environs ~ exploring and asking questions, delving into its history, a great adventure. Have I seen i...

You can tell it's winter in Utah When it snows in Utah the cities are quick to deploy snow removal equipment, especially along main roads and in commercial car parks. Utahns look to their own neighborhoods, clearing driveways, steps, paths etc. Since recent precipitation has been a mix of rain, freezing fog, ice pellets and snow, along with several weeks of below freezing temperatures, the removal process has been slower than normal. Suburban footpaths still have layers of ice and some church carparks are skating rinks. With my electric chair, I have had the occasion to to get stuck in ice (no traction), and on one occasion becoming high ended on an undetected ice mound. However with caution and an entrenching tool, I am managing to get where I need to be. Salt Lake City Central is kept...

Surprisingly, there are several great down payment grants that are available in Salt Lake and they are not very difficult to qualify for. I’m always a bit surprised at how many people are not interested in pursuing one of these grants, especially since many of them don’t even make you pay back the money as long as you own the house for long enough. Many of these down payment grants in Salt Lake are literally like free money. So why would any home buyer in Salt Lake not look into a down payment grant? I’ve found that there are usually two reasons for this.   1. They don’t know that these down payment grants exist Solution: Here is a list of every down payment grant in Salt Lake. Bam. That link may have just earned you $5000. You’re welcome.   2. They don’t know how to qualify for a down ...

Zillow knows a thing or two about real estate and housing markets. Their Chief Economist and their Director of Mortgages predict that Housing prices will be up 3% nationwide in 2014, with Salt Lake City, Utah as the #1 Hottest Housing Market. Factors in making this prediction included the unemployment rate, population growth and Zillow's home value index. Other predictions are that home loans will be easier to get as interest rates rise, drying up refinance business and forcing lenders to be more competitive on purchase transactions.  In any market it is important to make sure the professional you are working with is working for you. It's critical in a hot market where it is easy for buyers to get carried up in the hype and competition that causes some buyers to overpay for properties. ...

It's time to take in Temple Square in Salt Lake City UT You've heard of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, lauded as America's Choir. Their home is the background of my picture above. The Tabernacle in Temple Square, a building with natural acoustics so good "you can hear a pin drop" ~ and you do when you visit the building. At night for the next month, Temple Square is an ocean of light and sound and people: locals and visitors. It is a part of the year when the world comes to Salt Lake City UT: just count the number of languages used by family groups among the visitors that surround you (and they do, super friendly, very involved). Don't miss the reflecting pool with its floating lights and white figures. The overall message is simple and inviting. Daytime lets you take in the depth and det...

Paper bags are designed to hold things At the Plaza in Salt Lake UT, hundreds of paper bags, each with its own bulb to make it a lantern at night, hold a message ~ a message related to Christmas. Each bag is open and upright. The messages are crafted in gold, They line the flower beds (now covered for the winter) and garden edges of the Plaza, inviting visitors to inspect each in turn. Ancient designs and modern language greeting offerings, old, new and universal. The paper bag lanterns are sentinels for nativity scenes depicted by countries foreign to me. Temple Square and Plaza is a beautiful place to visit anytime: at Christmas time, its visitor appeal is magnified to the spectacular. Share part of your Christmas season with us in Salt Lake City UT. You may even be inspired to make o...
