I live in that part of Sandy UT designated as Historic Sandy. Our Trax (light rail) station at 9000 S bears that name. Trax provides easy access to downtown Salt Lake City. In the suburbs the light rail is a high speed train with its own corridor: in Salt Lake City, it becomes a tram competing with vehicular traffic. Early pioneers arrived in the 1860s and for a while Sandy was sparsely settled as an agricultural community. With the coming of the railroad in 1877  into Sandy  and with mining in nearby canyons, Sandy exploded into a booming mining town. In Sandy Utah, when it comes to snow we are willing to share. We are in a lull between storms - a chance to rearrange the snow for asthetic or practical purposes, a chance to keep the roads clear. There is quite a load on most home roofs that may become a challenge if more snow falls before a melt. It might have been forecast as 2 -4 inches - a mere dusting of fine snow, but it looks like getting to a foot or more by early morning. This scene showing my neighbor's home across the circle was taken at 1.30pm. You can see that our garden lamps and the chimes have their own little pointy snow caps. Driving home at 7am was a little tricky as well as quite exciting. Being a Sunday, roads were not bladed, promising an interesting Monday morning commute for those unfortunates who have to go to an office, shop etc. Looks like a good day coming for SOI calls. One advantage of the snow has been that the temperature has risen to 33F, above freezing even, but that is sure to change come nightfall. Canyons School District - Home. There hasn't been a new school district established in Utah in almost 100 years, but little more than a year ago, in July 2009, the cities of Cottonwood Heights, Sandy, Draper, Midvale and Alta broke away from the Jordan School District to create the new Canyons School District. Ski Day Passes and Packages are on sale around town. These are entry to snowfields described as the Greatest Snow on Earth - dry powder at its best. Between now and early Spring the Salt Lake Valley of Utah plays host to myriads of visitors from all over the world to sample its snow sports. Ski clubs from everywhere have regular bookings at local hotels making daily excursions to popular ski resorts. Names like Snowbird, and Alta, Park City and Powder Mountain, Snow Basin and Solitude are heard everywhere. For the hardy there is the Ski SaltLake Super Pass, taking in four resorts on one day. Sandy Utah, Grace Luterhan School Operation Christmas Child Needs Donations.    Two more days until we assemble and pack all the boxes for Operation Christmas Child. A Revolution in Kissing. Two young entrepreneurs, Dallas Robinson and Mike Buonomo, have their wares on display at Sandy Southtowne Mall. The beautifully flavored and paired lip balms are designed to be savored by individuals who upon kissing their partner  end up with the full treat, Peaches and Cream, Fire and Ice, (you get the picture). The product is well packaged, and although the marketing has a definite hook, it has a practical outdoor benefit of SPF 15 The two have a business plan that takes them to the world by the end of 2011 and are very vocal in their ability to  produce locally and distribute to the world . Book Fair at Grace Lutheran School, Sandy Utah October 31st - November 7th 2010.  Its that time of year again.  Grace Luterhans annual book fair.  Grace  Lutheran is holding their book fair to help share the love of reading to everyone.  All proceeds go to the 7th and 8th graders who are working to earn money for the Washington D.C. A home energy audit in Salt Lake City, Utah that we did yesterday was kind of interesting. The home was built in the mid 1970's and had new windows and doors and was caulked and sealed up very well. I was impressed with just how well this home was insulated and especially how weather tight the ceilings and walls were. I started the energy audit at the front entry and placed the blower door in the garage entry door. An energy audit in simple terms is when we close up all of the intentional openings and depressurize the home with a calibrated blower creating a negative pressure.
