Like seeds in a garden, sowing love matters. A grandchild's giggle brings a smile. Knowing our children are successfully making their way in to the world warms the heart. My steadfast husband and life partner makes me laugh over a silly Valentine's Day card because we share the same humor...priceless. I am indeed blessed and sowing the seeds of love trumps all else in my life. Soon Nerdin Gardens will come alive again...thinking Spring. Happy Valentine's Day all, may you be surrounded in love, always!

That's Pure Propagation! My mother loved indoor plants, nurturing several varieties throughout the house, from Rubber trees, Philodendrons (aka elephant ears), Money plants, Spider plants, Dracaena to luscious, green Boston ferns. She had a natural ability to take parts of plants that were weak or broken and place the stems in water to grow a new root system. She was always successful in her efforts and I was very fascinated by this!   Quite often there were multiple glass containers on window sills with plants in different stages of growth. She knew exactly when they were ready to re-plant in the perfect mixture of dirt and potting soil. She was a pure propagator and probably didn't know there was a term for her methods. Which reminds me of this quote: An idea needs propagation as much...

Nerdin Gardens: Modern Day Mr. Green Jeans When early Spring makes a showing, my husband, affectionately known as Mr. Green Greens, will begin the first stages in planting the garden, like: Tilling, feeding the soil, ensuring systems are in good working order. A diverse selection of fruits and vegetables are planned once again. Each year, we save quite a bit of money on fresh produce and every growing season, a renewed excitement begins, along with required hard work.  No time for lazy standards! Mr. Green Jeans and I often meet in the garden to decide on which fruits and vegetables will serve us well. All raised beds will be utilized, plantings determine watering schedules. The secrets of successful gardening are simple, it takes: passion knowledge sincere care maintenance intentional ...

Nerdin Gardens: Nature's High Desert Flowers  It's almost December and the front and back yard are still boasting pops of awe-inspiring color from the slightest to brightest of tones. Am excited to take a perimeter walk daily to capture their beauty. Like nature, I am working extremely hard to finish up the year strong. Am blessed to work in an industry that continues to gives back, especially for those with a strong work ethic, follow up and follow through. Nature's high desert powers add ever-so subtle wowers to vividly hued flowers. ~Wanda Kubat-Nerdin in Nerdin Gardens Happy Monday all, it's looking bright from here!

Thanksgiving 2021: My Heart Resides at Home Maintaining a stable home environment is the best thing we can give to ourselves and family. We have done exactly that and consider ourselves lucky to live where we do. Happy to take my shoes off at the end of the day and relax, putting work aside until the following day, to be present.  Growing up in a military family meant packing everything up and moving every couple of years, transferring to new school, making new friends. I vowed that when starting a family that we would remain in one place with no plans to relocate. Thankfully, that plan came to fruition.  Twenty-three years of memories in the same home are stored in my heart, not to mention the thousands of photos taken through the years. When outside, I see where the boys: hunted Easte...

Nerdin Gardens: Here's looking at ya!Now that we are well into fall, many plants are nearing the end of their growing cycles. Where vivid greens and vibrant blooms once dominated, tans, yellows and browns are now in fashion. Cooler temperatures, along with shorter days determine the work day for many still foraging for daily food quotas. Early risers often net better results when meeting the day, rather than chasing time. Those serious make a show by getting up, dressing up and making an appearance. The desire to achieve set goals dwells in most beings. The instinct to survive, for others, can be a fight to the finish. Three quarters down in the year 2021. Here's looking at you, at the year in retrospect, the next 6 weeks, then the year ahead.  How will you spend that time?  Wanda Kubat...

Nerdin Gardens: 10 Great Reasons to S-M-I-L-E! Yesterday, I harvested the Meyer lemons off our tree after several weeks of diligently and patiently waiting for that deep yellow color, reminiscent of nature-ripened goodness to appear on their skins.  These lemons are less tart. I cut one in sections and ate each piece slowly, savoring the flavor. It is the sweetest lemon I have ever tasted! With the rest, I just may make several glasses of fresh lemonade. Meyer lemon trees have shiny, dark green leaves, are self-pollinators, producing fragrant white buds with a pink base. They require at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Morning sun and afternoon shade is best. We bring them out once spring makes an appearance. Some have called it patio gardening. We place them in the exact spot for opt...

Nerdin Gardens: Gardening with Grandpa As children, our grandpa insisted we help him in the family garden. We all excitedly agreed. I realized pretty quick the difference between a potato plant and a weed. He was a steadfast but patient teacher. Row upon row of raised mounds and plantings, the trenches ran alongside. He would open the irrigation gate and water rushed quickly from starting to finish point, giving the earth a proper dousing. Knowing when to plant, how to thin the plants to prevent crowding for proper growth, the right amount of  water that was necessary and also the exact time to pick for an optimum harvest. His systems were dependable year after year. No overthinking necessary, just the natural ability to problem solve as he went along. This guaranteed there was food on ...

Nerdin Gardens: Digging up Bones Some people live in the past, refusing to move forward for many reasons. They know some things are meant to be left alone but still resurrect those memories of a time once done and long gone. A gardeners work is never finished and while we dig into the nutrient rich soil, we live for today and plan future crops. Mistakes are taken into account and new processes implemented to ensure success. We refuse to dwell on what could have, should have or would have been. This week, all plant material with be removed and the raised beds covered until spring to prevent invasive weeds from taking over. No time to be digging up bones when front facing and looking ahead. Happy gardening all!

Nerdin Gardens: M-I-C-K-E-Y M-A-T-E-R! Did you sing M-I-C-K-E-Y M-A-T-E-R? I did! As the last of the fruits and vegetables are harvested from the back yard garden, I noticed a phenomenon that happens occasionally with nature. We had a trifecta tomato, three orbs formed together on one vine. I was delighted that it looked similar to Mickey Mouse's head and ears and quickly took a photo while singing... M-I-C-K-E-Y M-A-T-E-R...Mickey Mater! Happy gardening all.

Nerdin Gardens: Sincere Gifts Shared As my husband, Michael was putting the finishing touches on a fresh basket for some friends, I was amazed how the natural beauty of the colors, shapes and sizes harmonized. It was a work of art! All fruits and vegetables were produced in our back yard garden, from the Roma tomatoes, midnight snack and super sweet cherry tomatoes, early girl tomatoes, lemon cucumbers, burpless-skinless cucumbers, pickling cucumbers, zucchini and yellow squash to the green and red bell peppers, banana peppers, jalapeños, poblanos, grapes and muscadines. We are both thankful and grateful for nature's gifts that are bestowed upon us time and again as happy gardeners.~ Michael Nerdin and Wanda Kubat-Nerdin in Nerdin Gardens Industry tie-in: Presentation matters in busines...

Nerdin Gardens: Going to Ground There are at least 20,000 varieties of bees worldwide. Among them are the Ground Nesting Bees that make their home by burrowing into the soil. They are fastidious diggers and often single dwellers. They play a huge role in pollinating crops, wild flowers, and fruit and I have a deep appreciation for their diligent hard work. Unlike honey bees, the queens live individually, raising their own young. The conical entrances to the nests are in patches of bare soil, preferring to live in sandy soils on south facing slopes. They do not form hives, but a large number of females may nest in the same area. As a solitary species, they are non-aggressive, males are unable to sting, though females will, if handled. Most activity at nest sites happens in early spring b...

Nerdin Gardens: Sowing the Seeds of Success!  Gardening is much more than just digging holes, planting and watering. The smells, sounds and sights are compliments of nature. The gifts bestowed upon us year after year are appreciated and respected.  As I stroll through the grounds, I am met with honey bees that are still foraging for food that will take them through the colder months. They hibernate inside their hive until spring makes a showing once again.  We will be picking lemon cucumbers for ready eating, ripe green peppers, perfect vessels to fill with Philly Cheesesteak ingredients for now and to be frozen for future meals. Caprese Salad Skewers are still in season.   Soon, plant material will be removed and the raised beds covered until the next growing season. It will allow us t...

Feeling 12 Foot Tall in Nerdin Gardens!Tomato plants are vines that climb and often become entangled. My husband thought to use landscape posts and green tape to trellis each one as new growth appeared to make them easier to harvest. Priceless! From past experience, these 5 reasons are why we back yard garden:1. Fresh food to eat. From garden bed to dinner table as quick as that! There is nothing better than available fruits and vegetables, daily. A pinch here, snip or pull and twist there and you have a side dish ready to eat within a few steps.  2. Better overall nutrition. Fruits and vegetable grown at home are healthier and taste better than mass produced vegetables exposed to synthetic substances. No pesticides and insecticides mean a safer environment for garden visitors like bees ...

Nerdin Gardens: Dog Vomit Slime Mold...🤢 Sounds pretty gross, right?  The visual is even less appealing than the descriptive name. It looks like dog gak and often shows up after long periods of rain or as a result of excessive watering. The mold thrives in shady areas, especially in bark mulch, grass clippings and dead leaves. It is a gelatinous, lumpy, yellow to white growth that is harmless to humans. Spread by the wind, the unsightly presence is easily removed by raking gently to prevent the spores from becoming airborn. Then dump into the garbage bin. Be careful where you step after a good drenching or you might get Dog Vomit Slime Mold on your shoe...Ewwww! 🤢  Industry tie in: When something unexpected shows up, figure out a way to remediate and move forward with confidence.
