The legacy continues for Will Edwards, our youngest of three childrren. Or, another way to look at it is, his legacy begins. Our youngest child found out he was offered undergraduate admission to Virginia Tech on the eve of his 18th birthday. How fortunate is the Edwards' household? Will is the fifth member of our family to attend this great institution of higher learning (Virginia Tech) and Blacksburg is a special small town in southwestern part of the state. The Hokie Nation is a close knit family and VT is a great place to attend college. We have enjoyed the many years of going back as alumni for special events, football games, and memorable moments with our family and old friends. This slideshow video shares some of this special bond that Hokies everywhere enjoy about being part o...

Bridges to Prosperity: Tyler's Story Tyler Edwards, a junior in Building Construction, has embodied Virginia Tech's motto Ut Prosim (VT's motto: That I may serve) while employing his academic training to help others. He is the Project Manager of Virginia Tech's chapter of Bridges to Prosperity, a service organization that builds footbridges in developing nations to meet the local community's needs. Yesterday, Tyler and four other students from Virginia Tech flew down to Guatemala to build a foot bridge over flood waters for local villagers. (UPDATE: the photo above is a photo of the bridge the Tech students built in Guatemala. They're all back at school now, mission accomplished!)     Four Tech students flew down to Guatemala yesterday to work over the next 17 days on a foot bridge whic...

Another 4/16 Day of Remembrance has come and gone, we will never forget Nicole White, and the 31 others. My daughter wrote this blog post yesterday and I felt it appropriate to repost here... living for thirty two Five years after the unimaginable tragedy of April 16th, 2007, I stand a senior in college, awaiting my graduation from the university that I call home. While I think of the thirty two lost each of the 365 days of the year, the anniversary inevitably approaches each year with the visible reminders of the lives taken from us too soon. The Day of Remembrance on campus provides an outlet for members of the community to remember and mourn the losses from this day.   "To live every day as if it had been stolen from death, that is how I would like to live. To feel the joy of life.....

Because of Tamara Dietrich's highly insensitve article last Friday, we continue to speak out about the Daily Press's unwillingness to retract the article and properly apologize for grossly misrepresenting what the Virginia Tech community is all about...   My daughter is a senior at Virginia Tech, and in 2007, she lost a friend and neighbor in the massacre of 32 VT students on that April 16th Monday morning. A week ago, a Virginia Tech police officer was gunned down during a routine traffic stop by a Radford student passing through town. Our local newspaper (with who I have just cancelled my subscription with) wrote an article last Friday that was highly insensitve and misrepresented what the Virginia Tech university stands for. Carly wrote a second lettor to the editor and her private n...

Yesterday was NOT a good day for me. Today, I'm a little ticked about the local newspaper's slant on the tragic shooting of a Virginia Tech police officer who was murdered  in his car in a a parking lot on campus. The gunman then shot himself in another Tech parking lot a few minutes later. The gunman is now reported to have stole a car Wednesday night in nearby Radford and he is not related to the school at all. Here is my letter to the reporter this morning and my daughter's blog post about the events yesterday...   To Peter Frost fo the Daily Press- I am not thrilled with the overall tone of your article today (yes, I know you reported quotes from people) and I’m not sure you fully understand how we feel as Tech alums and as a family of Hokie Nation. I had to be careful in how I a...

I've decided to post my daughter's blog post from late yesterday, after the tragic shooting of a Virginia Tech police officer which took place around 12:30 pm during a routine traffic stop. (the shooter was not related to the school and was subsequently found moments later, dead. He shot himself in a nearby parking lot).   Thursday, December 8, 2011 the love of a family   I have struggled all day with how to articulate how I feel in light of the events that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus early this afternoon. I have spent the day with my roommate and close friends; offering support to each other at such an unsure time.   I recognize that terrible things happen in the world, and we will never be able to escape them. It is especially painful for our university to be the victim of...

Sports Calendar for Virginia Tech Football for the Fall 2011 It's that time of year, when college football teams across the country are fine tuning their rosters, participating in scrimmages, and getting ready to kick off the college football season. It's no different in Blacksburg, Virginia for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Students are back on campus and classes started today. Fall is my favorite time of year, when the leaves turn Orange AND Maroon, which just so happens to be Virginia Tech's school colors.   Check out the football schedule sports calendar for this fall... This was taken after it had been snowing for about 2 hours....we ended up with 15 1/2 inches.  The forecast is calling for more snow this afternoon.   Interstate 81 southbound was shut down due to the storm.  Graduation ceremonies for Radford University were canceled; however, the ceremonies for Virginia Tech took place as planned.
Remember that whole Taylor, Bean & Whitaker mess?  It’s been on my mind since it happened, I think in part because I have friends whose mortgage is with TBW.  And one of the questions they asked was “where do I pay my mortgage?“  Word to the wise … keep paying.  They’ll tell you where to send your next payment. But what hypocrisy, because as homeowners are making their payments to Taylor, Bean & Whitaker, it’s highly probable that the company is not making the necessary payments to the municipalities and insurance companies on behalf of those same borrowers.  I dug around a bit today and am starting to hear that that in fact is the case – more and more companies are probably going to begin reporting that escrow payments from TBW are not being made. Find out what to do, at NRVLiving.com ...

Several months ago, I started hiring Sean Shannon Photography to take high-quality photos of the real estate properties.  I was finding that while my camera certainly takes good photos, it couldn't show the house off quite as well as a professional could.  I talked with Sean about my problem, and he immediately showed me what I was missing. Now, my properties stand out.  They pop.  And they turn heads.  I use Sean's photos everywhere I run an ad, and everyone comments on how they look.   Read the interview with Sean Shannon at NRVLiving.com ...
I still have a few months to go before our season opener against Alabama on Sept 5th and it still seems like a lifetime away. It's pitiful- I'm religiously checking Twitter, HokieSports, ACC page and ESPN for any news concerning our football team. I've refrained from texting some of my friends on the team- they'd probably think I was crazy. I was very excited to see 5 of our guys make it onto ESPN's ACC Top 30 Players List :) Jason Worilds, 4th Darren Evans, 6th Stephen Virgil, 16th Kam Chancellor, 21st Sergio Render, 25th   Go Hokies! Can't wait for a fantastic season... I see a few Blacksburg trips in my future...

Spring is here and that means the flowers are blooming, the birds are singing and it's time for football!  Yes, I said it!  FOOTBALL!!!! The Virginia Tech Orange and Maroon Spring Football game is this Saturday, April 25th at 2pm at Lane Stadium! The game is FREE, parking is FREE and it's a great opportunity to get a preview of the upcoming football season! There's even a spring football media guide!  Here's a link to it.
Oh Lane... I would spend every Saturday of every weekend here if I could. So many great memories in this stadium... being painted up, sharing turkeylegs with my best friend, being hit in the head with airplane bottles, rushing the field... ::happy sigh:: IF you've ever heard anything about VT football, you've seen Lane Stadium. It was built in the 40s and has been drowning out audibles ever since :) We've been in the top 10 loudest stadiums in the country for I don't how long and we only seat about 65,000 people. They did a total revamp of the stadium back in 2006 adding on more offices, the tutoring center where I worked last year, shopping and most importatnly boxed seating (and let me tell you it is pretty darn spiffy up there!). Our field ain't too shabby either- we've got one of ...

It's a Tuesday night. You're bored and it's Blacksburg. Where do you go? TOTS of course! (Top of the Staris, but no one calls it that- dead giveaway that you're not from the area) Around here, Tuesdays are known as TOTS Tuesdays. Karaoke night is a great night to go watch people make idiots of themselves trying to remember all the steps to NSync's Bye Bye Bye or something random like that. And you can't leave without having a rail. Trust me, one is all you need. You might be thinking -ok, TOTS is obviously a bar, that means they have crummy food right? Wrong! Their food is actually pretty darn good. My personal favorite is their pulled pork bbq. Yum! They have both outdoor and indoor seating up on the deck and down in the patio. It's usually full when it's warm out, so get there early...
Burruss Hall is named after our 8th school president- Julian Burruss. He was the first alumni to become president and his claim to fame is convincing the board of visitors to allow white women to attend the college. Much of the money to build this came from the New Deal. Several other buildings were finished around this time including Eggleston (now dorms and offices), Owens (built to replace the aging mess hall, now an a la carte food court) and Squires (now includes classrooms, diversity offices, SGA, Breakzone- bowling and pool, Au Bon Pain, Sbarro, two ballrooms... known as the hang out place on campus) to name a few. The main part of Burruss was finished in 1936. By the 70s both the east and west wing had been completed. there is a 3000 person aditorium on the lower level. ...
