I have driven by it for almost 20 years. I have wondered what was so special about that house. Other than confusing its owner with another much more famous man in history, I knew that it was the "Burke" house. Not Edmund Burke as I once thought but Silas Burke. I haven't been able to determine if the two were related (probably not) but they lived on the earth around the same time. Actually, Edmund died a year after Silas was born. The home, built in 1824, was owned by Silas Burke. He was a local farmer, merchant, and politician according to Wikipedia and iloveburke.com. No sooner do we finish all of the local county fairs then it is time to start the fall Arts and Crafts fairs.  The Burke Centre Craft fair is on tap for September 11 & 12, 2010.  In addition to the wonderful vendors there is fun for all ages.  Pony rides, moon bounce face painting and minature train rides.  For the bigger kids there is a 28 foot rock climbing wall and the Iron Man Obstacle Course. This year the adults only Wine Garden will have extended hours 5:30 t0 10:30 PM on Saturday.  Featuring wine from Three Fox Vineyards and musical entertainment provided by a variety of entertainers. Tuesday, September 7, 2010 marks the opening of the new school year here in Fairfax County. While many of the school commuters are seasoned veterans there is a group of "newbies" every year. However, they all deserve your respect and consideration. The school zone speed limit lights have been on this week to remind us of the upcoming beginning of the school year. The law requires you to stop behind a school bus when their red lights flash.School crossing guards will be out in full force every morning and afternoon at critical intersections. They are there for one reason only - it is to protect our youngest citizens as they walk to and from school. The dog days of summer are starting to creep into Fairfax County.  When they do one of the best local places to escape is Burke Lake Park. Burke Lake Park  is located just off of Route 123 and a few miles from the City of Fairfax. With over 850 acres including a 220 acre lake there is plenty for everyone to enjoy. For the walkers, joggers and bikers the 5 mile dirt loop around the lake is a great way to take in all of the vistas. For the youngsters the miniature train ride chugging along at 10 MPH is a hoot.
