Mount Gilead, A Centreville, Virginia Historic Site   Dolores and I enjoy taking day trips from our home in Montgomery County, Maryland. My sister, Lynne, encouraged us to visit Mount Gilead in Centreville, Virginia, the home of our great, great grandparents, Malcolm M. Jamesson (1805-1884) and Julia M. Jamesson (1812-1876). Mount Gilead, built in the second half of the 18th century, is the sole survivor of Newgate Village, a colonial settlement and trading center that was renamed Centreville in 1792 by an act of the Virginia assembly when given town status. The structure is an example of Potomac River architecture with porches and chimneys. Mount Gilead served as an ordinary and a private residence. Malcolm M. Lunch at Sweetwater Tavern, Centreville, Virginia   On Saturday, Dolores and I took a day trip to Centreville, Virginia.  The primary purpose of the trip was to visit historic Mount Gilead which was the home of our great, great grandparents before and during the Civil War. We enjoy visiting microbreweries and decided to have lunch at Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville. The restaurant is beautiful, the service was great, the food was excellent and we enjoyed sampling the craft beers. We recommend Sweetwater Tavern if you are in the area. Try a round of Samplers which includes the five beers on tap. Our favorite was the Chipotle Porter. Family History: Mount Gilead, Centreville, Virginia   In a recent blog, I posted a photograph of my great grandmother, Margaretta "Maggie" Jamesson Macrae (1846-1929). Maggie grew up at Mount Gilead (c.1785) in Centreville, Virginia.  Mount Gilead became the home of the Malcolm Jamesson family in 1837. Mr. Jamesson operated a tannery nearby. Mount GIlead remained in the hands of Jamesson family members until the 1930s. It is believed that during the Civil War, Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston, Commander of the Department of Northern Virginia, resided at Mount Gilead. His operational headquarters were nearby, at Four Chimney House (it stood near where Wiloughby Newton Drive is today). Almost 40,000 Confederate troops were quartered in the Centreville area.
