!!!It’s Here; It’s Here!!! The Pungo (Virginia Beach) Strawberry Festival Of Course May 26th-27th 9am-7pm The parade will begin 10am May 26th Why will the one-traffic light hamlet of Pungo have a population boom this weekend of over 120,000 people? Three words explain it: Pungo Strawberry Festival. For the past 24 years, the village has hosted the annual two-day celebration honoring it s sentimental favorite fruit. From a small grass roots festival of 50,000 guests at the inaugural Memorial Day weekend fest to last year's 120,000. No money comes from the city and proceeds go back to the community. The other day I talked about Chesapeake becoming the home of the largest biodiesel plant in the country. Well now its official because a California company, SE-Energy Technology, has chosen Chesapeake due to its proximity to naval installations as the U.S. Navy is striving to make biodiesel 20% of its diesel fuel consumption. Biodiesel is clean-burning and is produced from renewable, domestic resources. How cool is that. This plant should come on by December and will employ some 40 people. The site is on 30 acres and will have storage for 42 million gallons.

The plant would be called the Virginia Point Biodesel complex and would feature twin domes some 47 outdoor tanks near South Norfolk in Chesapeake. It would almost directly across from a proposed ethanol plant. This biodiesel plant according to its California based developers could be the largest in the world. Ever hear of jatropha? Well its a tropical plant and could supply over 320 million gallons a year of the clean-burning fuel. Where will this plant come from? How about Africa, India and the South Pacific. As part of the development plans in Chesapeake, jatropha would be grown in Mexico, too. This is a real technical marvel and several technoligies would have to be merged to make it work. Can it work? According to Clifford...
