I love helping buyers find a home that meets their needs.  For me, it is a little like a mystery novel.  Where they start and where they finish are often 2 different visions.  I love the buyer who has done their research. Sometimes they miss the mark on what their next house should or shouldn't have.  Here are some of my casual observations. Do not search for a home based on square footage alone.  I understand the need to have a certain amount of living space, but that space is not defined the same in every home.  Often how many rooms you need is a better measuring stick. Do not search for a home based solely on the photos found on the Internet.  Please do not say, "I don't want to see that home, the agent didn't post any photos." OR "That home has sloping floors." When indeed it was ac...

It was the eve of Christmas Eve, and preparing for the holiday was our top priority. So you can imagine my dismay when the dryer started to squeal and squeak.  It was early morning, so I had hope that a local appliance dealer/repair shop may be able to fit me in for a repair that day.  When I called at 8 am, Billy Poulston of Poulston's said he would send Jonathan first thing. Upon Jonathan's arrival he took the entire dryer apart.  There was a missing sock hiding in the drum~I of course was disappointed that only one was to be found.  After about 1/2 hour of evaluating the machine~he pronounced it almost dead~better to buy a new one.  I knew in my heart that may be the answer given that this dryer we have had for over 15 years and it gets used almost everyday. The maintenance fee would...

Another weekend and another great event in Farmville, VA.  For me, I never want to leave my town for fear of missing amazing events and amazing people.  This weekend I attended a collaborative event with Maxine's Fine Dining and J Ferguson Gallery. On Friday evening, J Ferguson, owned and operated by Jarrod Ferguson, held a fine art shopping event at Maxine's Fine Dining.  We came to shop for Christmas presents and enjoy a wine and cheese open house.  There was artwork of all prices and styles available to choose from. Jarrod displayed jewelry, pottery, paintings and ceramics.  Maxine Rutledge, owner and operator of Maxine's opened her bar and provided appetizers for the shoppers.  Maxine's is a wonderful fine dining establishment that provides amazing food, a warm environment, and grea...

Welcome to Farmville, VA.  Farmville is a small town with a sleepy main street.  Recently a small local bakery decided to open on Friday nights!  A group of my friends and I always get excited when someone is willing to provide social opportunities and so of course we were there for Friday night's festivities! As we gathered to place orders we greeted neighbors and friends that had already gathered to order and enjoy a new opportunity for food and drink after dark. Spirits were high and business was brisk.  We sat and enjoyed our food and drinks as more people came and went.  It was a nice change of pace for a Friday night activity in town.   As a small business owner, I understand the financial and time commitment that other business owners make to have a valued establishment for othe...

The first weekend in December always proves just how many opportunities there are in this wonderful little town of Farmville. This year there were even more events than ever and I had to pick and choose which to attend. There was no reason for anyone to complain about having nothing to do! We are blessed by the opportunities brought to us by the location of Longwood University in town and Hampden-Sydney College nearby. The Longwood Center for the Visual Arts is located right in the heart of Downtown Farmville at the intersection of two of the busiest streets. There are exhibitions all year round and one of their special programs is art workshops for the local community children. On Saturday morning they offered a Winter Wonderland workshop. Over 300 children attended and I enjoyed watch...

It was a cold and blistery day in Farmville, VA, when my car needed gas.  I was fortunate and blessed to have a place to stop and get gas and not have to leave the comfort of my warm and cozy car. Yes, you read that right, I did not leave my car and I got a full tank of gas.  Pure is a locally owned gas station that provides full service fill ups at the same price of most other local gas stations.  It is open from 7 AM to 8 PM.  The staff are a talkative and caring bunch.  On this particular day, I decided to get out and get photos.  The gentleman working for the day was curious and reminded me that he would indeed pump my gas that I didn't need to get out of my car. I wanted to take photos to share this establishment with the public.  I really enjoy pulling up and getting gas without l...

This summer many of the local area businesses participated in a local bowling league at the Farmville Bowling Center. Since we competed against each different companies throughout the summer, we were able to get to know employees from many of the local businesses. In addition, each week one of  the companies had the opportunity to advertise their services. In addition to being a unique source of advertising. This gave our agents an opportunity to get out and build relationships in the local community. Tuesday, August 3rd was the last night of the competition and State Wide's Night. Bill Benhoff and Brock Robinson represented our agents that evening. As the night wore on, some of group started becoming a little less competitive and practicing some more unorthodox techinques. Fun was had ...

I can tell you all about real estate, home schooling, caring for a young diabetic child but I don't know what to blog about!!! Anybody have a word of advice for me?

Heart of Virginia Festival in Farmville, Virginia - May 1, 2010  Updated Jan. 2013              The Heart of Virginia Festival is an age old tradition here in Southside Virginia. This writer can't tell you exactly when it originated but I can tell you of the joy and laughter it brings our community. About this time of year, when the leaves on the trees are in full growth, the Town of Farmville starts buzzing around getting ready for the annual event which attracts thousands from near and far.  Some people think of it as a homecoming of sorts, as others come for the good music, food and fireworks. It seems the Heart of Virginia Festival is a melting pot of young and old. Kids chasing each other with pop guns, while Mom and Dad check out the streets lined with venders showing off there fi...

I love my town!  We have great events, a small town feel, the ability to participate in aspects of the community.  It is a fantastic place to call home.  So when my mother-in-law decided to relocate for retirement to Farmville, VA I was excited.  She would be able to live and breathe what I have grown to love. She is arriving tomorrow to buy a home.  And I am frantically looking for a home for her to call her own. I have called my fellow Realtors to see if they have future listings coming on the market, I have searched for for sale by owners, I have walked with my dog on every street with a home within town limits looking for activity that often indicates a future home sale.    At this time I realize how little real estate is one the market in her price range and caliber of home.  I wil...

I tell people all the time that Farmville has so much to offer!  Every week I have opportunities in this great small town that I really enjoy getting to participate in. Next Thursday evening, Jerry Greenfield, the co-founder of Ben & Jerry's will be visiting and speaking at Longwood University.  His speech's topic is "An Evening of Entrepreneurial Spirit, Social Responsibility and Radical Business Philosophy".  The tickets are FREE.  Yes, that is correct, this will be a free event!  I am so excited to attend.  The best part is there will be free tickets for an ice cream social to follow!  I hope they have Chunky Monkey!

It's that time of year.  If you haven't already been through the drill, plan on spending lots of weekends in your child's junior and senior year traveling to see what's out there.  As a parent with a third child heading off to college, the internet has given us a wonderful opportunity to get information and view virtual tours online.  But like buying a house, you won't know if it's "HOME"  -  or, I should say  -  your child won't know if it's home until they visit.  We spent the last few weekends traveling the beautiful roads of Virginia to see the wide array of state universities available to us.  This week, we took a tour of Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia.  I must say, I did not go this morning with exceedingly high expectations.  Up until now, my daughter had been determi...
