This photo shows just one of the brick walls that surrounded the DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.  What many folks new to the Lorton area don't know is that the bricks used to make these wall and the buildings of the former DC Reformatory were produced by the inmates themselves. It's not often you find a baseball field under the watchful eye of a guard tower.  In this case the ball field is part of the land that used to make up the 3200 acre DC Reformatory in Lorton VA.When the reformatory was in full operation the ball field was well used not only by prisoners playing games but teams consisted of prison guards and inmates together.  Local high school and minor league baseball teams would also play against the inmates as well.In June 1959 Grammy winner Ella Fitegerald performed at the baseball field with almost 2,000 inmates crowding the benches. Today the field sits empty and in disrepair even though a number of the other buildings nearby have been renovated to accommodate the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center. Today millions of American's will vote in their local elections.  For me it was a matter of lacing up my tennis shoes and walking to my local voting place.  That walk took me along the Occoquan River and reminded me that only a few miles up the river a 120 women were jailed for demanding the right for women to vote. Barrett House today stands empty and surrounded by fencing to keep out intruders. However, since the early twentieth century the home located on Ox Road in Lorton has stood watching the changes to the surrounding area. Originally the property where Barrett House sits was part of a 3,500-acre tract granted by Lord Fairfax in England to Virginia colonist Robert Carter, Jr. in 1729.
