Located just a few miles from the main gate of Fort Belvoir the neighborhoods that make up the Lorton area have a long tradition with the military and military families in Northern Virginia. Lorton history goes back to our first Commander in Chief, George Washington. There are older neighborhoods such as Harborview which are just as popular today as they were when they were built in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Over the last 10 years a "new" Lorton has emerged which has brought a renewal to southern Fairfax County. Most of the "new" Lorton growth came about when a prison Complex located in the Lorton area was ordered closed in 1998. With just over 3200 acres the prison complex gave Fairfax County developers an opportunity to create an entire new vision for the land and its usage. With a Virg...

I first snapped a photo of this old Lorton home/general store/service station/newspaper plant in 2007. It had been occupied until a year before - as you can see it was in extremely poor condition. The photo at the lower left was taken in 2008 as renovations started. Last week I drove through Lorton again and snapped the photo at the lower right. The interesting aspect is that it is at the intersection of two well traveled Lorton roads - I would have thought it would be restored commercially, but I'll keep checking to see what happens.   ***********************************************The Kruschka Team has 33 years full time experience in Prince William County”Experience Isn’t Expensive – It’s PRICELESS”NO REGISTRATION NORTHERN VIRGINIA HOME FINDERContact Karen and Art by Email or c...

Sandwich lovers in Lorton are enjoying toasty goodness again, now that the local Quiznos Sub restaurant has reopened in August under new ownership.  It's the 9433 Lorton Market Street location near the Shoppers Food Warehouse and UPS Store.  For about a month, signs in the windows at the South County sandwich store noted that the store would reopen soon, so many neighbors were waiting and watching.   With a revitalized appearance and a well-trained staff, the new store is once again offering sandwiches, soups, salads and satisfying the taste buds of those who crave "toasty subs."  Two favorites for the locals -- the "Bullet" for $3 and the larger "Torpedo" for $4.  Quiznos also serves kids meals, and has optins to add a drink and chips or a drink and soup for an add on price to any...

Fairfax South County Slurpee fans got a surprise this Monday when the former Gunston Food Mart and Deli officially turned into a Lorton, VA 7-Eleven store.  Many neighbors learned about the store conversion when they saw the bright "Now Open 7-Eleven" signs on the sides of Lorton Road and Silverbrook Road and the banner on the Gunston Corner Village Center marquee.  This location is so new, it isn't showing up with a 22079 ZIP Code search on the 7-Eleven Web site, and the primary signage isn't up yet.   The Lorton 7-Eleven store layout and offerings are quite different from the Gunston Food Mart and Deli, while the ownership is the same.  Some veteran 7-Eleven employees are staffing the store to give it a good start, and ensuring that the coffee, Big Gulps (R) and Slurpees (R) are t...

Caribou Coffee in Lorton, VA quenches thirsts of Fairfax South County locals, weary house-hunters, and neighborhood parents and kids lately with some healthy specials. A sign in the window of this Lorton Market Street business entices customers to try any of three different featured beverages on Mondays.  And if you need some tips on what to order, you may find Dan and Faisal behind the counter, both ready with details about all the menu offerings.  If you notice the daily quiz* on the overhead menu, and tell them the right answer, you'll get a few cents off the regular price of your order, too.   Once you have that order, you can get comfortable in the upholstered chairs near the fireplace (not needed for warmth this summer!), cozy up near the front windows, sit at the tall bistro tabl...

Finding Good Hair Day in Lorton, VA 22079, a sophisticated South County Salon may be a nice surprise compared to what people who had visited the area a few years ago may expect.  Much of the residential development in Fairfax South County, including most of the luxury properties including some green homes, is fairly new, and it can take some time for specialty retail and local businesses keen on great customer service to move into a neighborhood.  It's in keeping, too, that the stylish residents of these Fairfax County homes would want a high quality, full service hair salon.  Good Hair Day is that and more.  Open Tuesday through Saturday with evening hours on weekdays, "GHD" salon manages to impress suburban parents, weary Washington DC commuters and even savvy big-city salon clients. ...

A few years ago new homes in Northern Virginia flew off the market.  Buyer's camped out so that they could grab a great lot or a lottery number for a future section.  Builders were in control and buyers happily paid what they asked.  Then the market changed and builders were hit hard.  Some local builder's lost properties to foreclosure and others just left projects half completed.Today in our area new construction projects are moving again and developments are seeing a resurgence of buyers.  New incentives, pricing and amenities are bring buyers back again.  In Lorton (VA) the delayed Gunston Cove developments are now selling.  Gunston Cove is within walking distance of the Lorton Market Street Square, minutes to Lorton Station Town Center, the VRE, Fort Belvoir and provide easy access...
