Located just a few miles from the main gate of Fort Belvoir the neighborhoods that make up the Lorton area have a long tradition with the military and military families in Northern Virginia. Lorton history goes back to our first Commander in Chief, George Washington. There are older neighborhoods such as Harborview which are just as popular today as they were when they were built in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Over the last 10 years a "new" Lorton has emerged which has brought a renewal to southern Fairfax County. Most of the "new" Lorton growth came about when the Lorton Prison Complex was ordered closed in 1998. With just over 3200 acres the prison complex gave Fairfax County developers an opportunity to create an entire new vision for the land and its usage. With a Virginia Rail Express ...

Lorton Station is a 300 acre subdivision of 950 newer homes just South of Fort Belvoir.  Detached homes and town homes are available and, yes, It is within approximately 15 minutes of the entrance to Fort Belvoir.  Additionally, it is only 15 miles south of Washington, D.C. The Lorton entrance to and exit from I-95 is just outside the community on Lorton Road.  On those occasions when you need to go to the Pentagon the VRE Lorton Station is in the community.  Take a Northbound train, change to the Metro Blue Line at King Street and go to the Pentagon Station. If you live around the Woodbridge Virginia area, then you know it's a bit difficult to find a non-chain restaurant. Well, if you haven't been to Pan E Veno in Lorton Station you are in for a treat! The moment you walk in the doors the aroma's with captivate you. Your tastebuds will be awakened with amazing flavor! Trust me you won't be disappointed! Pan E Veno is excellent,  I no longer have to go all the way to Ol Towne Alexandria for a authentic Italian Restaurant. Check out the website...then make a reservation! Exit from I-95 at the Lorton Exit and head toward Rt 1. Turn left on Lorton Station  Blvd. Pan e Veno is on the left mid way up the road. There is plenty of parking behind the complex. Enjoy!

If you are looking for a new place to call home minutes from the main gate of Fort Belvoir then you need to check out this townhouse in the Shepherd Hills neighborhood of Lorton. This post is a sneak preview with more information to come.  The home just went into the MLS tonight and with a price of $250,000 I don't expect it to last to long.  Why?  Because it is a regular sale! Check out 7838 Shepherd Hills Court and then give me a call for a tour!

This week with Earth Day falling on Wednesday provides everyone the opportunity to take a closer look at the three "R's"; Recycle, Reuse and Reduce in their homes and communities.  To help celebrate the week I've decided to highlight places, homes or projects in my area where I've seen some great examples of the three "R's and share them with you.  Some may be "recycled" posts, which seems appropriate given the theme of the week. My first highlight of the week is the Lorton Workhouse Arts Center.  For over 100 years Lorton was an area that most residents of Northern Virginia went out of their way to avoid.   As a prison complex the 3,200 acre site was huge and at night driving by the area the signs warning you not to pick up anyone on the road were ominous.  When the facility was ordere...

Just a few minutes from the main gate of Fort Belvoir is the quiet neighborhood of Harbor View.  If you are looking for a Lorton neighborhood with mature trees, large half acre (or more) lots and no cookie cutter homes then Harbor View is a neighborhood you want to check out. The community offers something unique in Northern Virginia.  For boaters the neighborhood features a boat launch ramp and storage facility in the community.  With direct access to the Occoquan River from Massey Creek the boat launch is a popular place for residents to gather.  Harbor View Recreation Club works to keep the channel to the river open, which has required dredging on more than one occasion.  Recent improvements to the tot lot and addition of fire pit means residents have even more reasons to head to the...

You have to smile when you see it, a big children's playground right behind the community center in the active adult neighborhood of Spring Hill.  Is there an expectation of some child like behavior among the homeowners in the community?  Forget playing bridge or shuffleboard just hang out on the monkey bars and zip down the slide!  In reality the developers of Spring Hill were smart enough to realize that homeowners in the neighborhood were going to be entertaining their grandchildren or great grandchildren and it would be nice to have a place for them to enjoy themselves without having to drive to another local park to play.   Within the gated neighborhood is a community center with indoor pool, tennis courts and walking paths to the Lorton Arts Center.  Even though the neighborhood i...

This guide is geared towards "new" Lorton. Lorton neighborhoods have been around a long time. In fact the Lorton area has plenty of history that goes all the way back to our early famous neighbors, George Washington and George Mason. If not then you are missing your chance to be impressed by the transformation of the former prison site in Lorton VA.   For over 100 years Lorton was an area that most residents of Northern Virginia went out of their way to avoid, especially at night.  The prison site was eerie and the two lane road past the prison was dark.    Now on Friday nights you can stop in for a flame working demonstration by renowned artist, dance a little cha-cha-cha with a Latin band or enjoy an art show while sipping a glass of wine.  Want to learn how to fuse glass?  Looking to expand your digital photographer skills?  Then you can sign up for weekend courses geared towards your current skill levels.  The winter 2009 course catalog has 32 pages of courses you can take!    The old prison buildings have been ...

Strange as it may seem the postal address of Inlet Cove is Fort Belvoir, Virginia 22060.  It is just 1 mile south of the main gate of Fort Belvoir between the Fairfax County Parkway and Telegraph Road and abuts  the southwestern section of Fort Belvoir. Community Features It is a 40 acre planned community with 148 detached homes and 108 town homes.  There is a pool, clubhouse, tot lot, playground and interconnecting walkways in the community.  When you pull out of the subdivision onto the Richmond Highway you are literally looking at the trees of the southern section of Fort Belvoir.  The trees of the post are on your left and right as you drive north.  If you are active duty or retired the Fort Belvoir Commissary is within 10 minutes The Gunston Plaza Shopping is less than 10 minutes ...

Harbor View is an established Lorton VA Community of 170 detached homes on ½ acre plus lots.  The majority of the homes are custom built - no one builder dominated the area.  The boat storage facility and boat launch ramp on Massey Creek has direct access to the Occoquan River.  Many of the homeowners store their boats on their lot since there are no restrictions about boat storage.  I know because the boat pictured in the driveway belongs to one of my Harbor View clients Harbor View is •·     Within 15 minutes of Fort Belvoir, •·     The I-95 entrance at Lorton and •·     The Lorton VRE Station.  Its' proximity to the railroad station and I-95 make it a desirable location for commuting to Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon.  Since it is on the Mason Neck Peninsula the parks below can ...

Cavanaugh Crossing is adjacent to the site of the now "former" Lorton Prison site.  The subdivision is accessed from Hooes Road - just a few seconds north of Route 123 in Lorton.  They are Brookfield built and feature Soutthern Mansion styles as well as traditional colonial style.  The Lorton VRE railway station is approximately 10 minutes away with service to both L'Enfant Plaza and Union Station in Washington, D.C. Once aboard you the train You can transfer to Metrorail at the Franconia-Springfield metro station. Another option is to pull out onto Route 123, cross the Occoquan River and be at the VDOT Commuter Parking Lot at Old Bridge Road in Woodbridge in approximately 10 minutes for Commuter Bus service to The Pentagon and Washington, DC Or join a Carpool.
