Harbor View is an established Lorton VA Community of 170 detached homes on ½ acre plus lots.  The majority of the homes are custom built - no one builder dominated the area.  The boat storage facility and boat launch ramp on Massey Creek has direct access to the Occoquan River.  Many of the homeowners store their boats on their lot since there are no restrictions about boat storage.  I know because the boat pictured in the driveway belongs to one of my Harbor View clients Harbor View is Within 15 minutes of Fort Belvoir, The I-95 entrance at Lorton and The Lorton VRE Station.  Its' proximity to the railroad station and I-95 make it a desirable location for commuting to Washington, D.C. and the Pentagon.  Since it is on the Mason Neck Peninsula the parks below can be reached in 15 minut...

The chart below demonstrates clearly that October 2008 versus October 2007 price reduction percentages were greater in Prince William County than they were in Fairfax County. Are there speculations as to why this occurred?  Yes, and that is exactly what they are - speculations.  However, we believe there is one indisputable reason. Home prices are normally lower in Prince William County than in Fairfax County So a huge number of sub-prime loans were made in Prince William County Home foreclosures, therefore, are higher in Prince William County Lenders have a greater number of homes to sell in Prince William County causing asking prices to be lower than areas with fewer foreclosures such as Fairfax County As a result, many people in Prince William County who do not have to sell their hom...

Hallowing Point is the epitome of living on the Potomac River in Northern Virginia.  The custom homes are on large lots with fantastic vistas of the Potomac River and Maryland.  The community has its' own park and boat launching facility right on the river. The interesting point is that you pass through several very prominent historical sites, parks and open pasture land to get there. Pohick Church -  It was located in a frame building at Old Colchester Road and Gunston Road.  No less than 3 prominent 18th century "personages", George Washington, George Fairfax and George Mason IV disagreed on relocating the church to its' present location at US1 and Old Colchester Road - GW won the day. Cranford United Methodist Church  It was moved to the old Pohick Church site, has been rebuilt and r...

Remember the Sunday afternoon drive?  That was a standard family activity until the mid 50's.  Well, the seven mile drive from US 1 in Lorton east on Gunston Road to and from Hallowing Point would qualify as a Sunday afternoon drive.  It is a relaxing, scenic drive Hallowing Point is the epitome of living on the Potomac River in Northern Virginia.  The custom homes are on large lots with fantastic vistas of the Potomac River and Maryland.  The community has its' own park and boat launching facility right on the river. This guide is geared towards "new" Lorton.  Lorton neighborhoods have been around a long time.  In fact the Lorton area has plenty of history that goes all the way back to our early famous neighbors, George Washington and George Mason.  There are older neighborhoods which are just as popular today as they were when they were built in the 50's, 60's and 70's. Over the last 10 years a "new" Lorton has emerged which has brought a renewal to southern Fairfax County. Most of the "new" Lorton growth came about when the Lorton Prison Complex was ordered closed in 1998.  With just over 3200 acres the prison complex gave Fairfax County developers an opportunity to create an entire new vision for the land and its usage.  With a Virginia Rail Express Station already in place in Lorton (1994) the ar...

When my parents discovered having two fidigty children in the backseat of a car, one prone to car sickness, made travel to visit grandparents in Florida more of a chore than fun they turned to the train for a better way to go.  As we grew older and a car trip or even an airplane would have made more sense we insisted that a train ride would be more fun.  And they were.  Looking out the windows as the countryside passed by, falling asleep to the clack of the rails and listening to the whistle blow as we passed through small towns were all part of the adventure.Fast forward to today and my brother who lives in Florida decided to retry our old family vacation with a twist.  He brought his family from Florida to Virginia on the Auto Train.  The train runs from Sanford Florida to Lorton Virg...

It starts every day at 4:00 PM when the Auto Train departs from the Lorton Auto Train Terminal on a non-stop trip to Florida.  A location outside Washington was necessary since the auto carriers will not fit in the Washington, DC railway tunnels.  The service has been operating at this location since 1971. From the time you turn your car over to the attendant, enter the terminal, board the train to your assigned seat and the deisel  locomotive pulls away from the station the sense of anticipation escalates. You know your car, van, motorcycle, SUV, small boat, jet ski or other recreational vehicle are tucked safely away in the auto carriers that are part of the train assembly. Meanwhile, you can sit back in your coach seat, bedroom or roomette, relax, read, enjoy the scenery, visit with ...

Gunston Manor is unlike any other Northern Virginia waterfront community.  It was developed in 1929 as a weekend camping retreat.  There are no sidewalks. sewers, very limited homeowner's association rules and a blend of newand then and old homes.  You'll see cottages with no more than 1,000 square feet of living space overlooking the Potomac River.  Gunston Manor has been home to some families for three or four generations.  Why?  They can kayak, fish, hike and water ski without ever leaving home. Due to its' proximity to the Mason Neck Wildlife Refuge you live with a wide variety of birds and animals  The road to Gunston Manor from Route 1 is a two lane, seven mile long road that passes POHICK BAY REGIONAL GOLF COURSE, POHICH BAY REGIONAL PARK, George Mason's GUNSTON HALL and the MASO...

Strange as it may seem the postal address of Inlet Cove is Fort Belvoir, Virginia 22060.  It is just 1 mile south of the main gate of Fort Belvoir between the Fairfax County Parkway and Telegraph Road and abuts  the southwestern section of Fort Belvoir. Community Features It is a 40 acre planned community with 148 detached homes and 108 town homes.  There is a pool, clubhouse, tot lot, playground and interconnecting walkways in the community.  When you pull out of the subdivision onto the Richmond Highway you are literally looking at the trees of the southern section of Fort Belvoir.  The trees of the post are on your left and right as you drive north.  If you are active duty or retired the Fort Belvoir Commissary is within 10 minutes The Gunston Plaza Shopping is less than 10 minutes ...

Just a few minutes from the main gate of Fort Belvoir is the quiet neighborhood of Harbor View.  If you are looking for a Lorton neighborhood with mature trees, large half acre (or more) lots and no cookie cutter homes then Harbor View is a neighborhood you want to check out. The community offers something unique in Northern Virginia.  For boaters the neighborhood features a boat launch ramp and storage facility in the community.  With direct access to the Occoquan River from Massey Creek the boat launch is a popular place for residents to gather.  Harbor View Recreation Club works to keep the channel to the river open, which has required dredging on more than one occasion.  Recent improvements to the tot lot and addition of fire pit means residents will be drawn to the harbor even with...
