Will there be a new Midtown Tunnel for Portsmouth?  Good question and one VDOT is looking into.  Before that can happen, VDOT needs to clarify its postion with the new Hampton Roads Transportation Authority (HRTA).  The new tunnel will help conjestion in the area as the Downtown tunnel is one of the most travled two lanes roads in Virginia.  A link to I264 will also be included in the new design.  The most important item is funding and who will fund the project.  Who funds the project determines how much upfront money is neeed.  The only thing I can say is that hopefully the state will come up with a better way to pay for the tunnel then with tolls on this tunnel and the downtown tunnel.    http://www.deniseallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, N...

The city council has decided not to help The TodiMusicFest with an additional $174,334 for the upcoming season.  This could put this years program in jeopardy.  Also in trouble is funding for future years.  This seems like one of those items you need to do to make the city a better place.  Granted that kind of money is hard to give up in a year that has seen hardship everywhere.  Hopefully the council can find the funding or maybe the Todi people can find funding elsewhere.http://www.deniseallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google deniseallen

If all goes according to plan, the Holiday Inn will be razed.  It will make way for a three phase project that will include up to 240 apartments, 211 condos, 29,000 sq ft of retail and 120,000 sq ft of office space.  Other projects in Norfolk have stalled but this project looks to get off the ground running.  The stumbling block could be the $14 million Portsmouth would have to put out for infrastructure and grants.  The city is already hurting from a failing economy but this may be worth investing in for the long term.http://www.geneallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google geneallen

It's a shame but the proposed new courthouse could fall victim to the failing economy and a city overburdened with other projects.  The biggest bill facing the city is the $45 million for the three story building.  There are plenty of other projects that cost money including replacing the westbound lanes of the Churchland bridge.  That could easily cost over $20 million.  The courthouse is old, leaky and has several safety and design issues.  Hopefully the city will be able to find a way to replace this aging building.http://www.deniseallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google denisea...

The Zion Baptist Church building was destroyed in a fire recently.  The building had stood since 1894 but other buildings had served the church since 1865.  Blacks had split off from the mother church for many reasons and was the first church owned in Portsmouth by blacks.  The church meets in an auditorium at the Sheriff's Academy at Randolph and Green streets.  The Rev. Thomas T. Shields thinks god doesn't want him to build a church building but to build ministries. http://www.geneallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google gene allen

The Planning Commission is is trying to make sure the waterfront is a community gathering place and not for inappropriate development.  You could get an upscale haircut but not a tan.  You may buy sweets from a bakery, art from a gallery but not get your shoes repaired.  Those adult magazines, forget it.  The city council needs to look at the changes and approve them.  http://www.geneallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google gene allen

The dreaded boat tax may be going away.  It has not raised any money and may actually be costing the city money to collect.  Many boats have left for cities with lower taxes causing marinas and resturants around the city gasping for customers.  If its broke, fix it.   http://www.genesellsvirginiabeach.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google gene allen

Surprise.  The council has decided to build a new Department of Social Services five miles away from the current building in downtown.  The vote was along racial lines and will probably not make a lot of people happy.  The new building will be at the corner of Pruden Blvd and Kings Fork Rd.  Two baseball fieldsl and two soccer fields will be replaced by the building.  This looks to be a wrong turn for Suffolk as the majority of people who utilize these services are in or around the downtown area.  Surley there could have been some real estate out there for Suffolk to purchase at a price that was reasonable. http://www.geneallen.com/  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real...

What do Cavalier Manor, a real estate development in Portsmouth and David L. Muckle have in common?  Well the name of course.  When Cavalier Manor was built in the late 50'/early 60's the developers paid tribute to past presidents and famed back Americans.  David L. Muckle was a Mason and Shriner and held the top office at Arabia Temple No. 12 as well as helped to organize the Fish Bowl Classic.  Take a drive through the area and enjoy the rest of the names.  Some you will know and some you will have to look up.   http://www.geneallen.com  Come and see ALL the Homes for Sale in Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, as well as the rest of Hampton Roads.  This site is updated daily with new real estate listings, pictures and other information vital to your home search.Google gene allen

After asking for more than a decade, Circuit Court judges are finally going to get a new building.  It should be built by 2010.  The building will be three stories built with brick and a stone court.  The courthouse will have updated security, more handicapped spaces and additional space for records and courtroom's.  The building will sit across from the current city hall.

Willet Hall has stood the test of time since 1955 (a good year since I was born that year).  Now that many world class talents have passed through the halls, it may me history.  The 1,924 venue was recently used as Hunt-Mapp Middle School.  The city is looking into spending roughly $6 million dollars to turn it into a free standing venue.  The 1300 seat Sandler Center for the Performing Arts in Virginia Beach recently opened at a cost of $47 million dollars.  With a big stage and $41 million dollars in savings it seems like a no brainer to me.  Portsmouth residents ought to be yelling at city council on this one.

Rear Adm. Matthew Nathan has assumed command of the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center.  Nathan has a nack for service as at one of his last commands the facility earned the highest patient satisfaction ratings of any medium sized hospital in the system.  Nathan can't complain of conditions at the hospital because his boss was the previous commander of the hospital.  Although the hospital doesn't treat a lot of the war wounded it is quite busy delivering over 42050 babies last year and having 15,000 patients admitted.  We wish him luck.

Citizens  met with out of town designers to help redesign this historic part of Portsmouth.  Vacant lots to flower gardens, playgrounds upgraded and dilapidated houses fixed up, this is what they came up with.  That was the easy part.  The hard part will be convincing the city to spend some money on the problem.  Hopefully the council will feel the need to help these forward thinking residents.

A group citizens and city officials from Portsmouth and Chesapeake made a visit to two ethanol plants in Wisconsin.  Some said it was purtrid and sickening.  Some of the officials thought it wasn't that bad.  Of course these plants were ten times smaller then the plant proposed for Chesapeake so comparasons may not be possible and the technology is five years old.  Of course to me smelly is still smelly.

The city of Portsmouth has hired a Texas-based developer to redevelop the site of the Holiday Inn at Olde Town on the waterfront.  This project will cost over $158 million but includes commercial, retail and residential components.  This is the largest single redevelopment project in a generation for the city.  The city is expected to furnish $11 million worth of infrastructure improvements to the site and surrounding area, and the project is expected to generate $29 million in tax revenue over the first 10 years.  Demolition of the Holiday Inn will begin in 2008.

!!!It’s Here; It’s Here!!! The Pungo (Virginia Beach) Strawberry Festival Of Course May 26th-27th 9am-7pm The parade will begin 10am May 26th Why will the one-traffic light hamlet of Pungo have a population boom this weekend of over 120,000 people? Three words explain it: Pungo Strawberry Festival. For the past 24 years, the village has hosted the annual two-day celebration honoring it s sentimental favorite fruit. From a small grass roots festival of 50,000 guests at the inaugural Memorial Day weekend fest to last year's 120,000. No money comes from the city and proceeds go back to the community. "It 's a great, family-friendly, fun event," said Sheriff Paul J. Lanteigne, a longtime festival volunteer and this year's honorary mayor of Pungo. "This is an old-time event that brings ever...
