The stalemate between the county and the school system seems to be at an end. Acting County Administrator Doug Powell expects to form a site selection committee to include representatives from James City, Williamsburg and WJC Schools by the end of the week, he said in an interview Tuesday. "The board (of Supervisors) has expressed an interest in us evaluating several different sites for a fourth middle school," Powell said, declining to list sites under consideration. The news breaks the deadlock suggested by the proposed budgets. WJC Schools Superintendent Steven Constantino's budget includes $40.2 million for a new middle school for 900 students, plus $11.75 million for a new central office facility. He sites the school at James Blair, the new admin building elsewhere. In contrast, Po...

Apples in Putlog Holes, Colonial Williamsburg, VA   When you visit historic Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia, you expect to learn much about early American history. The following link will provide the history lesson but first you may want to know about putlog holes. Putlog holes are niches in masonry construction that supported the scaffolding for 18th century masons. Putlog holes were normally filled with mortar when construction was completed. The putlog holes are open at the Palmer House and it is a Christmas tradition to place apples in the putlog holes. Read the full story at the following link. Apples, Putlog Holes, and Provost Marshals The putlog holes of the Palmer House stayed open for two decades, until 1779 when mortar filled the blanks, but it wasn't until 1953 that they we...

Holiday Wreath, Colonial Williamsburg   If you enjoy holiday decorations made with natural materials, it is a good time to visit Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. At the time of the Revolution, Williamsburg residents did not use the kind of decorations that we not enjoy during our visits. Colonial Williamsburg was first decorated for Christmas in 1936 and Christmas decorations were popular by 1940. Read the article at this link for more of the history on holiday decorations. Freedom Park, Williamsburg, Virginia   Colonial Williamsburg is one of our favorite travel destinations. We like to explore the historical buildings and the gardens. When you visit a destination many times you discover some things that may be missed by many visitors. Freedom Park is near the Colonial Williamsburg area but is not one of the regular destinations for most tourists. If you visit the area when flowers are blooming, be sure to include Freedom Park on your list of places to explore. This weekend, we are in Williamsburg, VA for Dick's daughter's graduation from the College of William and Mary.  While we were walking around the campus, we ran into these guys in their colonial costumes giving a little performance.  As an old piccolo player, I was drawn to the high pitched music.  And of course, I had my camera in hand!   If you are planning a move to or from the Washington, DC area, I can help!  I am licensed in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia.  You may call, email or text me at:  Housepat@mac.com, 202-549-5167 SEARCH ALL LISTINGS IN THE DC METRO AREA CHECK OUT MY LATEST BLOG IN THE WASHINGTON POST!

I'm guessing this weather vane, sometimes called a weather cock, is pretty old.  It sits atop a building in Colonial Williamsburg that dates back to the 1700's.  While they were somewhat functional, helping people to know which way the wind was blowing, these vanes were more decorative than anything else.  I took this last weekend using a Nikon P500, which as a very cool telephoto lens.

This is an adorable little cottage in the historic section of Wiliamsburg, Virginia.  It probably dates back to the early 1700's.    And I'm guessing that it started off as the kitchen to the really big house next door.
