County coucil member  and mayoral candidate Dan McShane has proposed extending protection to the Lake Padden Watershed similar to that of Lake Whatcom and Lake Samish. Just wondering what folks thought about this. I have mixed feelings at the moment. On the one hand I am certainly into protecting our lakes. On the other Lake Padden is not as critical as Lake Whatcom which isproviding drinking water to the citizens of Bellingham. If we remove the land in the Lake Padden Wateshed from development, then that seems to me like we will be eliminating a lot of potential homesites in the Yew Street Road area which is slated for urban growth. If not here, where? We want to avoid sprawl in the county, and we are trying to reduce the amount of land available for development close to the city. As t...

It was pretty hot today and while I was working, my family got to go out and play in the Nooksack River. It just got me to thinking about telling you about the Nugent's Corner Nooksack River access. Whatcom County has a 14 acre site near the Nugent's bridge near Deming. Take the first right past the bridge and follow the access road and you'll be there, free parking and all. A short walk down the river to close yourself off.

Starting tonight and running or dancing through August 1, The Downtown Renaissance Network presents will be presenting Downtown Sounds, the concerts in the alley between Holly and Bay/Champoion streets.  It is the alley next to The Wild Buffalo House of Music. The shows run from 6-9 pm. They have a great line  up of musicians starting tonight with Flowmotion, followed next week by Bow Diddlers, after that Randy Oxford Band and finishing the season with one of my favorites, The Clumsy Lovers.  Blond Ambition a group of local Bellydancers will open each show.

More and more, we're hearing about green homes and green building. What does this really mean? Personally, I want to install a 12 person hot tub on my property (kinda crazy, I know), but I don't want to contribute any further to the climate crisis. Professionally, I want to provide clients with good information on this topic. To more effectively answer the "green" question and to more accurately assess self-described "green" property listings, here are a couple of links that provide good definitions of "green" building practices, materials, products, vendors, etc...BuildingGreen.comU.S. Green Building Council

Bellingham beaches are a perfect place to spend that summer afternoon.  Whether looking for a place to swim, sunbathe, jog, or picnic, at least one of these great Bellingham locations will suit your need. Several Bellingham beaches rest within the city limits.  Boulevard Park is a local favorite.   Accessible by road, trail, or kayak, the park draws visitors of every kind.  Boat watchers can stroll on the rocky, half-mile long Bellingham beach and enjoy weekend sailboat regattas.   Groups often spend the evening barbecuing, tossing frisbees, or playing volleyball, while others find solitude in combing the shore for shells.  The colorful sunsets are universally popular. Marine Park is just to south, huddled between the train tracks and the Fairhaven shipyards.  Despite its seemingly indu...

Bellingham summers are magnificent.  Both tourists and locals love the town's weather, activities, and exciting energy. Fun, weekly opportunities abound during the gorgeous Bellingham summer. Nearly every Thursday, for example, one hundred passengers pile onto a tour boat for the Bellingham Bay History Cruise.   The tour is guided by a curator from the Whatcom Museum of History and Art; the cruise's ongoing popularity suggests that the guide is not only knowledgeable, but also entertaining.   (Yes, Bellingham even has entertaining curators.)  In addition to learning local history, passengers get to see an incredible sunset, harbor seals, and the city from an exciting new perspective. The Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema is unique event.  Every Saturday, moviegoers take advantage of the Bellingh...

Bellingham festivals highlight the best aspects of the city - volunteers who make the events happen, unique cultural facets of the community, and residents who love to have fun. The most famous of all the Bellingham festivals is the annual Ski to Sea Race.  Hosted annually on Memorial Day Weekend, thousands of athletes from around the world participate in the unique event.   Ski to Sea originally focused solely on the race - a seven-person relay beginning with skiing on Mt. Baker and ending in a kayak on Bellingham Bay.  The event has since expanded to include a parade and lively gathering of vendors near the finish line.  This Bellingham festival is not only the largest and best-known; it's also a local favorite. Each Fourth of July, the city holds an exciting Independence Day Festival...

A Lot of Flowers, the cleverly named Fairhaven shop, is a local favorite.  This Bellingham florist's quaint atmosphere attracts many neighborhood shoppers, as well as plant-lovers that travel from around the city to explore the A Lot of Flowers garden.   In addition to "lots" of flowers, the shop sells garden decorations, candles, and other plants. (360.647.0728) Rebecca's Flower Shoppe, also located in Fairhaven, is one of the most unique Bellingham florists.  Employees do whatever it takes to create the perfect bouquet or decorations.   Last year, for example, they made ch...

For most of us, our homes are our innermost sanctums and must reflect who we are both inwardly and outwardly. I'd like to think all banks and lenders have your best interests at heart, but I've heard it said far too many times that a fool is soon parted with their money! I propose to First Time Homebuyers to first of all--get informed! Invest some time up front before you start looking at houses. For example, you can get your free consumer credit report over a 3 month period (request one report per month from each of the 3 Bureaus) and see if you need to make improvements in your credit at least 3 months before you go for a loan. https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index.jsp  With so many great resources, it's hard to pick just one source, which is why I compile my blogs (no ads just...

Interesting graph this month, the average sales price went over $400,000and took a good leap over 2006 and last month. The increase for the average price is 7.2%. The median price rose as well quite a bit over 2006 - 8.9%, but a slightly lower rise compared to last month. So Bellinghm prices continue to climb. We live in a beautiful place and the Real Estate values are showing it to be a desirable place to live as well as the press. If you would like any more information about Real Estate or Real Estate statistics visit my website at BellinghamProperty.com
