There’s a teeny tiny little park at the very northwest corner of Renton Municipal Airport, probably one of Renton’s better kept secrets, unless you fly into Renton in a seaplane or you’re a local like me who’s been around these parts for a long time. You'd probably never know it existed. I love to stop here on occasion when I take the back way home from Seattle down Rainier Valley. The park at the Will Rogers - Wiley Post Memorial Seaplane Base is just a small patch of grass with a monument. Yet, it's significant because this is the place where Will Rogers and Wiley Post took off (from the lower 48) to explore airmail routes to Alaska and Russia then to continue their adventure to encircle the globe. The views from here are beautiful looking north over Lake Washington at Mercer Island. ...

Will Rodgers and Wiley Post were self made men. Both went after a life they were creating through passion, daring, raw talent, persistence, and wit. Both became the stuff that books are written about, stories are told, and movies are made. Born November 4, 1879 on the Dog Horn Ranch in the Indian Territory that would later become Oklahoma, Will Rogers was the youngest of 8 children in a close and loving Cherokee family. He dropped out of school in the 10th grade and his first big adventure was in 1901 when he went to Argentina to work as a Gaucho then off to Australia as a circus performer doing rope tricks. Later Will joined Vaudeville, the Ziegfeld Follies, then to Hollywood to star in 70 movies, became a columnist who wrote over 4000 articles, did radio, and traveled the country as a...

Late Saturday morning I get a call just before noon from my friend Dave (Dave Hoskin). "Hey, if you got time?.. we're playing a gig at the Lakeshore Retirement Home on Rainier from Noon to 2:00 pm. Swing by and say hi..." I’ve mentioned Dave a few times in my posts. We get together for coffee every couple of weeks at Mom’s Kitchen and other places too. We also share of passion for literature and love going on our annual trip to the Seattle Antiquarian Book Fair. He’s one of my oldest and dearest friends. Today was such a plus! I got to see another dear old friend of mine, John Giuliani Jr. His Dad and my Dad grew up together in Renton. Our families were close for decades! Google Plus including Circles has nothing on us, we’ve known each other forever. We're connected to so many of the s...
