Every town has its icons and for me the SR 509 (East 21st Street) Bridge in Tacoma is a beauty. It spans 707 feet in length over the Thea Foss Waterway, carries 4 lanes of traffic, and the twin towers reach 180 feet tall. The only other cable stayed suspension bridge in Washington State is the SR 397 Ed Hendler Bridge in Pasco Kennewick. At heart, I’m a minimalist and I love the design aesthetic of this bridge that was first suggested by local architect Jim Merritt back in 1991. I’m so glad his idea won out over the original plan presented by the State Department of Transportation, and a tip of the hat to then Mayor Karen Vialle and U.S. Representative Norm Dicks for helping to make it happen. Tacoma's First Night comes again Tonight.  For those who haven't already purchased their admission, price for those over 6 years is $14.00.  If you purchase online, you will get a paper ticket, that can be turned in at several participating locations to get the official First Night Button, which provides access to many events. Several of the museums downtown are participating today, with free admission (for those with First Night buttons). In addition, there will be many arts related activities (dancing, music, art activities) to watch this evening. Late this afternoon, there will be a one mile race (for which participants paid a $5.00 fee.)  Then at 6:30 pm there will be the annual parade to start off the evening activities.
