Every town has its icons and for me the SR 509 (East 21st Street) Bridge in Tacoma is a beauty. It spans 707 feet in length over the Thea Foss Waterway, carries 4 lanes of traffic, and the twin towers reach 180 feet tall. The only other cable stayed suspension bridge in Washington State is the SR 397 Ed Hendler Bridge in Pasco Kennewick. At heart, I’m a minimalist and I love the design aesthetic of this bridge that was first suggested by local architect Jim Merritt back in 1991. I’m so glad his idea won out over the original plan presented by the State Department of Transportation, and a tip of the hat to then Mayor Karen Vialle and U.S. Representative Norm Dicks for helping to make it happen.
