Did You Know?........Drain Clogs                      Clogged drains always are at the top of the list of annoying household problems.  But, before you call the plumber, try one of these  3 easy, chemical-free fixes.   SOLUTION:  Baking soda and vinegar.  Pour 1/2 cup baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup white vinegar.  Let sit for 30 minutes to an hour.  Repeat if necessary.  ** I usually add some salt too.  I follow this up with flushing the drain with hot boiling water too.  Works great!!   SOLUTION:  Use a plunger to unclog the pipe.  If it's in a sink, cover the overflow hole with a towel.  Coat the lip of the plunger with petroleum jelly, for a better seal, and cover the entire drain opening with the plunger.  IF there isn't enough standing water to cover the rubber...

Ibuprofen or Acetaminophen?                        How do you know when to use Ibuprofen and when to use Acetaminophen?   Contrary to popular opinion, the two are not always interchangeable.  Both relieve pain, but they work differently.    If you have a headache, try either one.  In the correct doses, both are safe choices for addressing mild to moderate pain. If you have muscle soreness or sprains, use Ibuprofen.  Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs relieve swelling from soft tissue injuries.   If you have a fever, use Acetaminophen.  It reduced body temperature.   Finally, if you have s pain, use Ibuprofen.  Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs block the production of hormones called prostaglandins, which cause cramps.   OF COURSE YOU SHOULD ALWAYS SEEK A PROFESSIONAL OPINION BEFORE...

How Do I Revive My Weathered Wood Deck?                     If you notice that your wood deck is looking weathered, here is what you can do.  First, sweep the deck, and then use a long-handled, stiff-bristle brush to scrub on a deck wash (like Concrobium house and deck wash, $12 at Home Depot) to remove dirt and mold.   Rinse with a hard stream of water, then apply a wood brightener (try Thompson's WaterSeal deck cleaner and brightener, $16, Farm and Fleet) to restore the boards' original color.  Let dry, and apply a wood sealer.  Wood can warp if it's not all sealed, so get under your deck, if you can, and coat the underside too.

Why Won't My Automatic Garage Door Open?       If your automatic garage door will not open, you should really hire a professional to take a look at it.  The culprit is likely the photo eyes, little sensors that detect if a person or object is in the door's path.  The eyes sit on either side of the door near the ground, and if they are dirty or misaligned, the door won't work.  You can first try to wipe them down with a cloth, or take a broom and sweep the tracking, but if that doesn't fix the problem, you will probably have to call in the garage repair technician.  If the eyes are broken or knocked out of place, he or she can easily put in new ones.  If they are not the problem, they will troubleshoot the door's motor, track and cables. - See more at: http://activerain.com/blogsview/431...

What To Do About Granite Counter Top Stains                        If you have noticed some staining on your granite counter tops, you might be interested in this.   Granite may look solid, but it is actually porous and can absorb spills if not sealed well.  If you have non oily stains, such as coffee, use concentrated hydrogen peroxide, found at any beauty supply store.  It is often labeled developer.  For oily stains, like salad dressing, use concentrated acetone.  It is different from nail polish remover.   Wearing rubber gloves, soak some paper towels in the peroxide or acetone, then layer them over the soiled area.  cover with plastic wrap, taping the edges.  Let site for 24 hours, then peel up the plastic, leaving the towels in place until dry.  Repeat until the stain is gone, th...

How Bad Is It? ......Old Bath Towels                      How bad is it to use really old bath towels?     There may not be an expiration date printed on your towel's label, but that doesn't mean you should dry off with it forever.  Although it is hard to pinpoint an average life cycle, towels usually start losing their softness and absorbency after two or three years.   Cycle after cycle of machine washing and drying will cause most towels to shed fibers, and they won't do their job as well.  Old towels can also develop a musty odor that is difficult to erase in the wash.  If they don't smell, cut them into cleaning rags.  If they do, it's time to trash them.    BOTTOM LINE:  Sort of bad!

A friend forwarded this to me, and I thought I would share it...               Top 10 of Barack Obama Quotes of Change written by Myrko Thum in Inspiration                      Yesterday I heard this little podcast on the spiritual website elsajoy.com about a peom for Barack Obama . In the introduction he says “This guy isn’t just a politician. He is a teacher, a leader. Obama is to politics what Mozart was to music. ” An amazing statement but it rings true. He is mindful, elegant and with a big heart. You get the feeling that as a politician he not only talks about integrity but actually has it. Looking from the outside (Germany) to the approaching election one dares to say: America, Obama is the best thing that could happen to you now! The only thing you have to do is make it ha...

How Bad Is It?..........Lawn Mowing                      How bad is it to always mow your lawn in the same direction?     For the lushest-looking turf, you have to mix up your mowing routine.  Grass tends to grow in the direction that it is cut, so continually trimming it the same way will prevent the blades from standing up straight, producing a flat, almost slanted look.  Instead, alternate among three patterns.  That way, you will encourage your grass to grow in all different directions, making for a thick, envy-inducing lawn.   BOTTOM LINE:  Pretty Bad! - See more at: http://activerain.com/blogsview/4308284/how-bad-is-it-lawn-mowing#sthash.xKLn3Xf8.dpuf

Hello,   I know I am not alone with having issues when I have a drafted post and I try to post it to public.  It suddenly shows up under the draft date instead of the public/current date.  I also know that the ActiveRain staff is aware of the issue per comments I got on my previous post about this issue.   In the last couple of weeks, I have been copying my drafted post and posting it to a new/public post and then deleting the drafted post.  It is a pain, but at least I show up in the current blog roll this way.  However, lately I have had a couple strange things happen even with this process.   In some of my copy and pasted posts, it still shows DRAFT on it, even though it is viewed publicly?  I haven't seen that before.  Anyone else have this issue?Another annoying thing I have seen i...

How Bad Is It......Gas Gauge                      How bad is it to drive your car when the gas guage is on empty?   If you are miles from the nearest gas station, don't stress.  Your car won't clonk out the second the low fuel light flashes.  Gas gauges are notoriously inaccurate.  In some models, you could drive 40 miles on an "empty" tank.  If you are worried about it causing mechanical problems, fear not.  Most cars built in the last ten years shouldn't be affected, even if you are driving on just a dribble of gas.  Even so, it is not safe to habitually coast on fumes.  After all, who wants to get stranded in the middle of the road?   BOTTOM LINE:  NOT SO BAD!

How Bad Is It.....Candles                      How bad is it to let a candle burn to the very bottom?    You want to get the most out of that pretty glass enclosed pillar, but the less wax in the jar, the more likely the flame is to brush against the side and the bottom.  And, if the glass gets hot enough, it could shatter.  Even worse, without enough wax as a buffer, the flame could ignite debris, like a  match that has been left in the candle, which could cause a blaze to flare up.    Candles cause nearly 10,000 house fires a year.  So, avoid risking it by tossing glass-in candles once the wax drops below half an inch.  Throw out all other kinds of candles when they get shorter than two inches.   BOTTOM LINE:  SUPER BAD!
