Veterans Day in Auburn and Opelika: Honoring Service and CommunityToday, I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you to all of our veterans—here in Auburn, in Opelika, and across the country. Every Veterans Day, I’m reminded how deeply service and sacrifice are woven into the heart of our Auburn–Opelika community. This morning, I stopped by the Veterans Memorials in both cities. The one at Auburn University sits in a place that symbolizes strength, pride, and education—a reminder of the students, faculty, and alumni who’ve served through the generations. The Opelika Veterans Memorial is equally powerful, surrounded by trees and tranquility. Each name, each plaque, and each flag represents a story of bravery that shapes the fabric of our hometowns. The Spirit of Auburn and OpelikaSo ma...

Veterans Day 2025Today is the day we honor all the many men and women who have served and are actively serving in our military.   There are approximately 16 to 17.5 million veterans in the United States, according to data from late 2023 and mid-2025   ActiveRain has members who have served. Most of us have had husbands, wives, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, aunts, uncles, and children who have honored us with their service.    Years ago, I shared a link to an article by Doc Bailey.  What I read made me pause and reflect on my own words when I said “Thank you for your service” to someone who had served.   As of March 2025, there were approximately 1.32 million active-duty military personnel in the U.S.  What about the phrase we all say…Thank you for your service. We all say it, and I kn...

A lament of the change of seasons in poetic form.Personally my feelings run pretty close to Titus the guinea pigs lament. We have already had our first snowfall but it came and went and we reverted back to brown and of course bare trees. One thing that first snow showed me was that Timmothy and I deserve a pat on the back for our preparation for the winter months. The two things we missed were we forgot to put a garden hose away and I still had an automotive battery in the garage that needed to come in. If you live down South you may not be aware that a battery that is in storage (as opposed to one in use in a vehicle) will freeze solid. When this happens the case will actually crack and the acid will leak out. A second note about the acid core type of batteries. If set on cement in stor...

To Those Who Served — We Thank You Today we honor all those who have answered the call to serve our nation. Let’s be sure to take a moment to give a big, heartfelt thank you to the brave men and women who have served—and continue to serve—our country. You are shining examples of the very best our nation has to offer. Your dedication reminds us of the values we strive to uphold every day—integrity, service, and community. As Winston Churchill said, “Never was so much owed by so many to so few.” Veterans are our families, our friends, our colleagues, and our neighbors. Veterans are the steady heartbeat and backbone of our communities. One day will never be enough to recognize your service, your commitment, your sacrifice. "No duty is more urgent than that of returning thanks."-James Allen...

We have certainly moved into cold season here in Minot ND as we just went through a couple of days with the daily high NOT reaching freezing.Colds may be the cause of the sneezes or it could also be indoor allergens. Either way one should cover their sneezes, which no one does in the little videos above.I'm not qualified to give medical advice but I will tell you that when I think a cold is coming on I double my intake of vitamin C and I also break out the zinc. Also speaking from personal experience it is my observation that genetics play a part in everyday health. While it seems I catch every/any cold that comes around my bride (Carol) has maybe been down with a cold 1 day in the last 28 years. My advice as a non-medical professional is that if you moved here from a warmer climate (ther...
