Pamelia Lake Is A Very Popular Trek In The Mt. Jefferson Wilderness Prior to the recent adoption of hiking passes in the last 3 years, Pamelia Lake was one of a handful of Central Oregon hikes requiring a pass to access. This special lake is an easy 2.5 mile hike which gains 550 feet of elevation as it passes through beautiful old growth forest, complete with many rhododendrons which bloom in late spring. Our hike in late September, 2023, included some views of fall color in sunny spaces where vine maple grew. We could also see areas where the 2006 flood from Mt Jefferson's Milk Creek Glacier wiped out portions of the trail and lovely moss covered forest floor. Plant life is returning and the area should eventually fully recover. Past the lake, the trail steepens for those planning on ...

One of the activities which you don’t find most places is Polo, never been to a match you need to try it at least once.  The Villages, Florida has a Polo Club and actually it boasts the biggest attendance in the United States with 30,000 attending annually.  Don’t know anything about Polo no problem show up early and take the 30-minute Polo 101 class so you know what a chukkers is and understand more about the sport.I have attended a few times and what we did is rent a tailgating spot which is located right next to the Polo Field.  You have a tent, tables and space up to 50 people.  Sometimes the horses are within 10’ from your seat.  Bring friends, food and adult beverages and make a day out of it!  One of the fun thing is between chukkers (kind of like quarters) you can join in on the...

By Myrl Jeffcoat, Greater Sacramento Realtor - Retired
On a pleasant drive, in the Greater Sacramento region is a mysterious place in nearby Ione.   We really can’t say Preston Castle comes “alive” this time of year, because many folks claim ghosts of the dead remain there still. The purpose for building the Castle was to accommodate the Preston School of Industry (reform school), in an attempt to rehabilitate juvenile offenders.  The Castle was completed in June 1894, and in 1960 the Castle closed, when a new building was constructed. Preston Castle is a California State Historic Landmark. The castle’s sandstone was quarried a few miles from Ione, and the bricks were created at Folsom and San Quentin prisons.  The cornerstone was set with pomp and ceremony, in late 1890. The Castle is now empty, with some action being made to restore it.As ...

Searcy Daily Citizen 1929Newspapers seem to be passing away.  We can now go to the computer in order to read the newspaper.  Many people don't have computer knowledge or own a computer.  Prices for the newspaper has gone higher so lots of people have dropped their subscription.  I plan to continue reading a newspaper each day if I can afford to do so.  I love and respect newspapers and the folks who make it happen.  I treasure the clipped photos of family members that I saved through the years. Above is a 1929 photograph of a newspaper newsroom.  Looks kinda messy, doesn't it.  I am attaching a photo of the names of folks pictured.  It was attached to the picture.

Farmers Work Ethic After hearing that younger generations think all food comes from the grocery stores in boxes, cans and bottles. It made me wonder just how far away from teaching the 'basics' to students, the public school systems have travelled.  Why would anyone in the world believe such nonsense? I may add that the mainstream media does nothing to promote American farmers but, instead, report that methane gas produced by cows is dangerous and they need to go! Take farming out of the equation and mass starvation will result. When born on a dairy farm, there are no sick days, even when temperatures hit below zero. I plan to always defend the techniques that determine their continued, earned success. Farmers work ethicHoe the soil, Daily to toil,Plant a seed In the hole,Keep an eye On...

Most people know about Scotch whiskey and haggis. But did you know that eggnog originated from the Scottish Auld Man's Milk? And butterscotch candy made its way to our shores courtesy of Scottish immigrants. Even Southern Fried Chicken owes its beginnings to both the Scots and West African people settling in the south. In Scotland, one way to celebrate the culture is through sport. Stateside, we celebrate with them through the Seaside Highland Games & Scottish Festival 2023 right here in Ventura. What: Seaside Highland Games & Scottish Festival 2023Where: Ventura County Fairgrounds (10 W Harbor Blvd)When: 9 am to 5 pm on October 14th & 15thAdmission: $5 to $40Seaside Highland Games & Scottish Festival 2023The festivities begin at 9 am on Saturday, October 14th, with a grand parade at hig...

Built in 1953, Harding College Building, Searcy ARLovely, isn't it?  I bought this card from ebay for 50 cents.  The back says, "A modern, air-conditioned classroom building, completed in 1953.  It contains business laboratories, lecture rooms, seminar rooms, small auditorium, and staff offices." A 1960 Harding Petit Jean has a picture of it and calls it the American Studies Building. My question is "Is it still there on campus?"  I am a Harding College graduate and the campus has grown so large that I have not been on it in quite a while. This was a beautiful building then and I hope it still is!
