The national food holiday may seem all about free donuts on the surface, but its roots date back to World War I. National Donut Day, first celebrated in 1938 in Chicago, honors the Salvation Army's Donut Lassies — a group of women volunteers who baked and delivered donuts to soldiers on the front lines during World War I.  According to the Salvation Army, the Donut Lassies are credited with popularizing donuts in the United States after troops returned from Europe.  The holiday is celebrated each year on the first Friday in June.   Krispy Kreme Swing by Krispy Kreme on Friday to snag a free donut of any flavor with no purchase necessary.  If one just isn't enough, the chain is also offering a dozen original glazed donuts for just $2 when you buy any dozen.  Dunkin' Dunkin' is bringing ...

Make your plan based on what you and your family and pets would need! And…don’t wait.    Hurricane Season is Here!   STOP Right There! Before you say, “But we don’t have hurricanes where I live,” you need to be prepared for any type of disaster…natural or manmade. Hurricane Season is here!   For the majority of my years on earth, I’ve lived near the coast.  The first hurricane I remember was Carla in 1961. Since that time, I’ve lived through countless hurricanes in Houston, Florida (remember Andrew), and the Bahamas, as well as tornadoes in Houston, the Bahamas, and Northern VA.     No matter where you live, it’s a good idea to have a plan - know what you would do.    First Have a plan and write it down.  When you are calmly thinking about what you’d take or do, it seems easy. However, ...

Because Every Home Needs a Meow: Celebrate Cat Adoption Month This Homeownership Month “What greater gift than the love of a cat.”... Charles Dickens June is National Adopt a Cat Month, a reminder that there’s no better time to welcome a feline companion into your life. Coincidentally, June is also National Homeownership Month—a perfect pairing that highlights a simple truth: a house becomes a home when it's shared with love… and maybe a purring cat curled up in a sunny window. Each spring marks the beginning of what's known as “kitten season,” when animal shelters across the country see a dramatic rise in cat and kitten intakes. Thousands of newborns, along with adult and senior cats, end up in shelters—many of them abandoned or born outdoors without a place to call home. This seasonal...
