My cute chicken house in Haiku Maui - happy chickens!My laying chickens are now happily housed in their own little chicken coop at the end of our yard where we can keep an eye on them.You might remember these hens when they were in their "chicken tractor" which was a pretty good setup until they got full size.  It was a bit crowded for all 8 of them at the time.  One hen didn't make it, just up and died overnight and then there were 7.  Still a bit crowded so my wonderful husband built them this small but functional little house... all from reclaimed and recycled materials.  Isn't it cute!Now they are relocated and have a permanent yard instead of a fresh patch of grass every day, so it looks pretty crappy.  The love to scratch and dig in the ground and the grass can't take too much of ...

We celebrated Earth Day weekend by getting a new spring garden tilled up and ready to plant. My dear husband goes all out once a year and gives it a deep digging with his backhoe bucket to get rid of roots. I jump in and remove most of the grass roots, tree roots and other debris.  After adding supplements like compost and lime, he'll roto-till it all up thoroughly to make it light and lovely and rich. Ready to plant a spring garden! This year while digging we also harvested the sweet potatoes which sort of took over naturally from some volunteer sprouts.  I've got a huge supply of sweet potatoes now which should store well for a few months, and the baby ones left in the ground will seed the next crop.The seed starter bench is already loaded with young plants ready for the ground: bok c...

It's gardenia season on Maui - spring is in the air.I love this time of year when the gardenias are blooming and their lovely fragrance fills the air!  We moved to Hawaii in the spring and I remember how wonderful it was to be surrounded with their heady scent.  Now it always reminds me of our first days of living here on this "best island in the world". Haiku Maui HI 96708 - vacant land market update Feb 2018Here's a quick report of the real estate market activity in my part of the island, Haiku. It covers a large area and there is so much diversity that it's really hard to make any comparisons, but if you follow the market you might find some interesting bits. At this point, it looks like sales volume is up from last year, and maybe even prices are up. Obviously there is a lot of inventory of large parcels and expensive parcels.  If you can afford these prices, there are some really great buys to be had along the north shore.What sold in 2017? - 33 parcels of land sold, priced from $293,000 to $1,725,000 - average price was $483,323 and the median sale price was $400,000 - lot size varied from just under 1/4 acre to over 31 acres - 9 ...
