Here's a quick look at what's going on right now in the Glen Carbon, IL real estate market.   Home sales started out weaker in Glen Carbon, Illinois in January 2010 year over year, but regained some pace to exceed 2009's closings in the month of February. By March, 2010 sales slipped below 2009 figures again, and in April -- as expected -- 2010 home sales spiked in Glen Carbon as the in-contract deadline for the federal home buyer tax credit arrived at the end of the month. As you might guess from this Illinois village's name, Glen Carbon once was home to a thriving coal mining industry in the late 19th century through the early part of the 20th century. Before coal became king, the region was nicknamed the "Land of Goshen" by early settlers from Virginia who thought it resembled tales of the lush Biblical paradise of the same name. In 1801, Col. Samuel Judy was granted 100 acres of land, becoming the first non-native settler in Madison County, where Glen Carbon is located today. Judy later served in Illinois' first legislature, which convened in Kaskaskia to the south.
