New Appliances for a Kentlands Home Our GE oven/microwave combination, our dishwasher and our refrigerator were the originals installed when our home was new in 1994. We decided to purchase new appliances and change the color from black to stainless steel since updated appliances would be desired when we sell our home. We selected new GE appliances at the Sears store at 701 Russell Avenue in Gaithersburg, Maryland 20877. The location is Lakeforest Mall. We also purchased a new garbage disposal to be installed with our new sink and quartz countertops. The appliances are now installed and the installation people were very efficient.Pete Peterson was the customer solutions expert and was very helpful with our selection and finding the correct sizes for the available space. New Kitchen Countertops for a Kentlands Home  The Kentlands community is now 25 years old and it is time for some home owners to upgrade their kitchens. Our home was built in 1994 and we still had laminate kitchen countertops. If we sell the home, home buyers now prefer other materials. We did some searching and pricing and made the decision to purchase new quartz countertops which have now been installed. Quartz is more expensive to granite but requires little maintenance. Dolores and I worked with Design Consultant Chris Nader at Granite Works at 1090 Taft Street in Rockville, Maryland 20850. They provided the countertops, installation, a new double stainless steel sink, facet and soap dispenser. Separately, we purchased a new garbage disposal and it was installed at the same time. If...

Bottlebrush, Callistemon, 'Red Cluster', Longwood Gardens IMG 7943 It is fun to photograph the bottlebrush trees in the conservatory at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA. The following Facebook comment provides some interesting bottlebrush history. Subhash Sharma  "Of the 35 or so Callistemon (bottlebrush) shrubs this one seems quite nice. They are found in the more temperate regions of Australia, mostly along the east coast and south-west, and typically favour moist conditions so when planted in gardens thrive on regular watering. However, at least some of the species are drought-resistant. Several species are used in ornamental landscaping elsewhere in the world.Callistemon species from New Caledonia were moved to that genus by Lyndley Craven and John Dawson in 1998. Callistemon ...

Dealing with Dandelions When we have dandelions in our lawns, we usually turn to weed killers or the special tools have been developed to dig up the dandelions.  Regardless of the removal techniques are used, many of the dandelions survive to grow to maturity. As I photowalk through Kentlands, I have a different approach to dandelions.  I like to photograph them.  You might not have noticed but every dandelion is different.  Dandelions provide some of the color that we know means that spring has arrived.Enjoy the dandelions in your neighborhood by taking photographs as you  photowalk and seek the colors of the season. No, I do not expect that you will photograph dandelions but I hope that you will walk for good health. These photographs are from my photowalk through our home community of ...

Use the strength of your local roots When you are competing in the real estate industry, the strength of your local roots may be one of your best assets. Share your unique connections in your community, tell your story and define yourself for building meaningful relationships.I could share many personal examples but I will limit these comments to a couple of ways that I have used connections to build my business. I was active in the local Lions Club and served a president. That role assured a leadership image with every Lions Club member in the region. A fellow member actually introduced me to my future wife, Dolores. As a member of a regional builders association, I was active on committees, went through the chairs as an officer and served as president of the organization. This lead to ...

Book Recommendation: The Sandcastle Girls by Chris Bohjalian The Sandcastle Girls (2012) is the fourteenth of eighteen novels by New York Times bestselling author Chris Bohjalian. This is a very compelling book that involves the impact of family history on contemporary life, a historical love story and the Armenian genocide that took about 1.5 million lives in the time frame of 1915 and 1916. Use the links to learn more about this author and his outstanding novels.  Books by Chris Bohjalian Goodreads Review of The Sandcastle Girls "It takes a talented novelist to combine fully ripened characters, an engrossing storyline, exquisite prose and set it against a horrific historical backdrop -- in this case, the Armenian Genocide -- and completely enchant readers. The prolific and captivating...
