Electrical Safety Don't overload electrical outlets/circuits.   In many older homes, the capacity of the wiring system has not kept pace with today's modern appliances. Overloaded electrical systems create fire hazards. Watch for these signals of overload: dimming lights when an appliance goes on, a shrinking TV picture, slow heating appliances, or fuses blowing frequently. Call a qualified electrician to get expert help. Do not run extension cords under rugs or carpets and replace any that are cracked, frayed or have loose connections.   Lily, Longwood Gardens Conservatory IMG 1723 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Does everyone know what to do in case of a fire?   Practice fire drills at home and have two ways out of every room. Fires are frightening and can cause panic. By rehearsing different scenarios, your family will be less likely to waste precious time trying to figure out what to do. Designate a meeting place outside your house or apartment building that is a safe distance away (a mailbox, a fence, or even a distinctive-looking tree) where everyone can be accounted for after they escape. Decide in advance who will help family members that may need assistance.   Longwood Gardens Conservatory IMG 1797 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Eggplant Parmesan, Bolognese Style   “We were making eggplant Parmesan for dinner, and we make it simply Bolognese style. We don't bread the eggplant or add ricotta, mozzarella, (Sicilian style). We grill the eggplant (in our panini machine) with a light olive oil coating, put the slices in a oven proof pan, add a basil leaf on each slice, top it with a spoonful of diced tomatoes (preferably San Marzano) aged Parmesan, and top it with another layer of eggplant slice and repeat. We cook in a 350 degree oven for 20 minutes.” – Ron and Alexandra Seigel Friday Fun: A Perfect Pairing For Eggplant Parmesan!  If you missed this suggestion, you should be reading the blogs by Ron and Alexandra Seigel.  Their blog is one of their wine pairing posts.    Camellia, Longwood Gardens Conservatory IMG ...

It's National Curmudgeon's Day Today's holiday honors those who "apply the needle of truth of the balloons of hypocrisy." It is celebrated every year on the birthday of W.C. Fields, a comic genius from the Golden Age of Hollywood known for hating children, dogs and all things nice. He was so fond of drinking, as the story goes, he once stood on a street corner and 43 cars pulled up to wait for his nose to turn green. To nominate just one artist in the Chrysler Collection for a curmudgeon label, we present Thomas Hart Benton. Where Fields' on-screen persona was largely an act, Benton was a prickly and opinionated painter who mellowed with age. That's what happens when you write your autobiography too early (38 years before he finished painting). While the hard-drinking Benton eventually ...

Throwback Thursday: Converse Sneakers & Andy Warhol Images    “North Andover’s Converse will launch a sneaker and clothing line celebrating late pop artist Andy Warhol’s iconic imagery. The Nike-owned brand’s collection, set for a Feb. 7 release, will feature Warhol prints on Converse’s own iconic sneaker — the Chuck Taylor All Star — which the artist had used as a canvas for his work. Sneaker designs include reinterpretations of Warhol’s Campbell’s soup can screen print, and motorcycle and newspaper prints inspired by Warhol’s mid-1980s Ads and Illustrations series. Graphic tees highlight Warhol’s “Converse Extra Special Value” work that features the Chuck Taylor All Star.” – Donna Goodison

If a fire occurred in your home, would your smoke alarm work?   Don't wait for a fire to find out. Smoke alarms can alert you and your family and provide the critical seconds you need to escape in a fire. Does your home have smoke alarms on each level, especially near sleeping areas? Do you test them monthly? Be sure to change the batteries, with new batteries, twice a year and replace alarms after ten years according to manufacturer's instructions. Remember, only a working smoke alarm can save your life.   Orchid, Longwood Gardens IMG 1793 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs

Extraordinary Gaithersburg: Jenifer Miller   In December, Jenifer Miller provided a platform for an entire community to offer support for Ken Gemmell and his daughter, Arabelle, who endured the unthinkable when wife Marie and two young sons, Devin and Cole, perished after a small plane crashed into their home near the Montgomery County Airpark. Knowing the family from serving them at a local restaurant, Jenifer quickly established a GoFundMe account, to which more than 10,400 people have made heartfelt contributions.   Jenifer's act of kindness to help this family through a most difficult time was recognized with a proclamation at the January 5 Mayor and City Council meeting. It is just one example of the extraordinary things taking place in this community each and every day. Let us kno...

When to retire your smoke alarms   Once your alarms reach the ripe old age of 10, they are eligible for "retirement" and need to be replaced by a new generation of smoke alarms.Even if your 10 year old, or older, smoke alarm still sounds when you push the test button, it should be replaced.   Poinsettias, Longwood Gardens IMG 1684 Photograph by Roy Kelley Roy and Dolores Kelley Photographs
