Gaithersburg receives Tree City USA award   Gaithersburg has been presented with a Tree City USA award for the 25th consecutive year. Sponsored by the National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service, the Tree City Award recognizes Gaithersburg's commitment to the environment and its aggressive approach to preserving and enhancing its urban forest. Raptors Rule Festival, Sunday, May 4th in Rockville, MD   This Sunday, May 4, 2014 is the date for the Raptors Rule Festival at the Meadowside Nature Center in Rockville, Maryland. The hours are from noon to 4 p.m. There is a $5 per person admission fee. Take your family for the experience of viewing some of Maryland’s premier predators. Kentlands Day, Saturday, May 3rd   The annual Kentlands Day events are scheduled for this Saturday, May 3, 2014. This is the 25th anniversary of the Kentlands community and the Downtown area of Kentlands will be filled with residents and visitors. Organizers estimate that over 20,000 people will participate in the events of the day. The Kentlands Day parade will begin at 10 a.m. and the main festival activities will take place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. There will be a Taste of Kentlands food expo, a children’s carnival, live performances on several stages, a business fair and a classic car show. April Tulips in the Sun   I just read about a blog that discussed how quickly one can write a blog. My idea is to start with a photograph because most people would rather enjoy a nice photograph more than some wordy comments. It is nice to see the April tulips and enjoy the warm sun after a long and severe winter. Book Recommendation:  Roosevelt’s Beast by Louis Bayard   I just finished reading Roosevelt’s Beast (2014) by Louis Bayard. This novel is based on Theodore Roosevelt’s expedition to explore the Brazil’s Rio da Duvida, the River of Doubt in wilds of the Amazon. This is easy reading that should not be taken as historical facts. My advice is to read the true story first as told in The River of Doubt (2005) by Candice Millard. Dolores suggested this true story of Theodore Roosevelt’s harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on earth. This book reads like a novel and I think you will enjoy this adventure in the Amazon. Cymbidium Orchids   We have a beautiful sunny morning in Maryland and life is good.  Recently, I have been editing some of my orchid photographs from the Orchid Extravaganza exhibit at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania.  Longwood Gardens is one of our favorite travel destinations.  Many orchid growers like the variety of colors of cymbidium orchids. Andrew Wyeth Exhibit at the National Gallery of Art   The National Gallery of Art will be presenting an exhibit featuring Andrew Wyeth’s frequent use of the window as the subject of his art. Maryland ranks first in percentage of millionaire households   The Washington Post has published the results of the Phoenix Marketing International report the ranks Maryland first in the percentage of millionaire households per capita in 2013. Maryland has approximately 2,199,912 households. 169,287 (7.69%) are millionaire households. Virginia ranks number ten with 208,187 (6.64%) millionaire households out of approximately 3,137,169 total households. Orchid Photographs   If you are one of my Facebook friends, you may have noticed that I have been posting orchid photographs from the annual Orchid Extravaganza exhibit at Longwood Gardens. I do not try to grow orchids but I do like to photograph them. The Orchid House at Longwood Gardens is within the very large Conservatory. The orchids receive professional care and are beautifully displayed.
