We keep getting barraged with articles warning that the recession is far from over, but when I recently called a Long Beach Island Realtor to refer a client to him, he told me that (1) most of the best summer rentals are gone, and (2) my client would have to spend over $2.5 mil to buy a home near the ocean. When I told him I'd prefer he look in Mantaloking, West Point Island and Bay Head, he told me the price would go up substantially to live on the ocean in one of those towns.  What in the world has happened in my old stomping grounds?  When I was growing up, in Asbury Park, Spring Lake was THE TOWN --- where all the "rich people" lived.  Anything south of Point Pleasant was considered "the boonies  We would occasionally take a ride to the boonies to swim in the Metedeconk River (it fe...

All New People, a play set in a luxury Long Beach Island home, is the hit comedy written by and starring Zach Braff of Scrubs and Garden State fame, has become the highest-grossing play of all time at the King’s Theater in Glasgow. In All New People, it’s the dead of winter and the summer vacation getaway of Long Beach Island, is desolate and blanketed in snow. Charlie is 35, heartbroken and just wants some time away from the rest of the world. The island, during off-season, seems to be the perfect escape until his solitude is interrupted by a motley parade of misfits who show up and change his plans. A hired beauty, the townie fireman, and an eccentric British real estate agent desperately trying to stay in the country suddenly find themselves tangled together in a beach house where th...

I was out in my backyard near Long Beach Island and saw a Monarch Butterfly; thinking the migration ended earlier than October, I decided to do a little research and came across an interesting site. Monarch Butterfly Migration Tracking Project which asks volunteers to help track the monarch butterfly migration each fall and spring as the butterflies travel to and from Mexico. You can report your own observations of migrating butterflies to real-time migration maps.   Last year, Long Beach Island, NJ, saw one of the most abundant showings of migrating monarchs in years -- if not decades. Light westerly winds had blown them over to the barrier island. There are far too many to even estimate a count.   Monarchs are especially noted for their lengthy annual migration. In North America they ...

Mandatory Evacuation Ordered on Long Beach Island at the Jersey Shore! Ocean County emergency officials have ordered a mandatory evacuation of Long Beach Island at the Jersey Shore.  The evacuation orders take effect at 8am Friday.  Those evacuation plans followed Gov. Chris Christie declaration of a state of emergency in New Jersey earlier today. As a barrier island, LBI is susceptible to the high winds of the hurricane, as well as the unusually high tides expected.  Officials are not taking Hurricane Irene lightly.  And they're not only concerned with our coastline.  New Jersey’s statewide average for rainfall this month is already more than double what it typically is, while some towns in the state appear to have already tripled their average August rainfall. Climatologists say as a ...

If you look up "High Bar Harbor" on Wikipedia, you'll find a description like this: High Bar Harbor is a neighborhood  located in the northwestern-most portion of Long Beach Township on Long Beach Island. The area, supposedly, has no beaches of its own. The 400 homes on the lagoons were developed in the mid-1950s. As the section is surrounded on three sides by water, almost all of the homes are on the water or have water access. The neighborhood has a network of canals leading from Barnegat Bay and is thus popular with boaters. While some residents are year-round inhabitants, the majority of homes are only occupied during the summer season. The neighborhood contains mostly residences and is known as a quiet, secluded, and exclusive area. High Bar Harbor Yacht Club is a private condomin...

This is the last weekend to see Judd Hirsch at the Surflight Theatre on LBI in ART. Oscar-nominated, Tony & Emmy Award-winning actor Judd Hirsch stars in Yasmina Reza’s internationally acclaimed, Tony Award-winning comedy ART.   Judd Hirsch ("Numb3rs," "Taxi", "Ordinary People," "A Beautiful Mind") directs and stars in this smart and funny play that explores the value and meaning of both friendship and art when a (nearly) all-white painting ignites an escalating argument among three men, threatening to destroy their long friendship. "Ninety-Minutes of Ferocious Fun!"   Judd Hirsch is probably best known for his portrayal of Alex Rieger in the classic television series "Taxi," a role that earned him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series. Hirsch also starred as John La...

As if "Jersey Shore," "Real Housewives of New Jersey," "Jersey Couture" and the countless other reality shows set in New Jersey aren't enough, another Jersey reality show may be coming soon. The Asbury Park Press is reporting that the stars of VH1's "Tough Love," Philadelphians Steven Ward and JoAnn Ward, are looking to bring a new reality dating series to Long Beach Township. But if you're hoping for a "Tough Love: LBI," you'll be disappointed. "It would be for a more documentary-style show about my family. And that deal hasn't been closed yet," Steve wrote in an email to the Press. The show will most likely be centered around their Philadelphia-based dating service, Master Matchmakers.  A dating service that seeks to "connect bright, attractive, and successful single people," accordi...
