They say that variety is the spice of life.  That is true in most aspects of your life here in the Westfield community.  Studies show that exercising moderately at least three times a week can reap massive benefits for your body and mind.  Westfield Y improvements have begun to ensure that a wider variety of people can add more pep to their step no matter what their physical condition may be. The Westfield Y's roots hail as far back as 1868.  Since then, the organization has grown from a small social group into a large meeting area and fitness center for the Westfield community.  The current building located at 220 Clark St began their first phase of Westfield Y improvements by widening the handicap access ramp and creating elevator service all the way up to the third floor.  This give...

Halloween is finally here!  Thousands of little hobgoblins will be roaming the streets tonight, begging for candy.  Now is a good time to go over Police Chief David Wayman's Westfield Halloween Safety Tips. It is highly recommended that trick-or-treaters in the Westfield community go out in groups rather than individually.  The saying "there is safety in numbers" is absolutely true.  With larger groups, having two or three parents along makes it easier to manage.  Make sure at least one person has a fully charged cell phone before embarking on the night's adventures.  You want to make sure you can call for help if you find yourself in the midst of an emergency.  Program the Westfield Police Department's non-emergency phone number (908-789-4000) into your phone in case you need it. If p...

Twice a year, the Downtown Westfield Corporation sponsors a special Westfield Girls' Night Out.  This particular evening is meant to encourage the female members of the Westfield community to get out, mingle and interact with local businesses on a personal level.  In its third year, last week's Westfield Girls' Night Out enjoyed its biggest turnout to date. > All participants queued up at the beginning of the evening to check in at the former Coldwater Creek.  Even a long line couldn't damper anyone's spirits.  Every guest received a commemorative tote bag for the evening, courtesy of St Barnabas Medical Center.  Lord & Taylor provided special presentations of fragrances, skin care, accessories and even a bra fitting.  Local eye care provider i to eye ensured shoppers kept up their stre...

NJ Monthly Magazine publishes a biannual report, ranking the 339 high schools in the most educated state in the U.S.A. Westfield High School has leapt up to #21 in their idiocyncratic rating system.  We are very satisfied customers of Westfield schools K-12.  I feel our 2 children have been exquisitely well served by our system. So why the jump?  I attribute it to the magazine's tinkering with their measurement methods, which are now more intensely focused on college preparedness.  Frankly, that is what our high school feels itself to be all about. Our high achieving schools, retail and restaurant rich downtown, leafy streets lined with pleasing houses, great commutes and recreation opportunities make Westfield a coveted hometown. Here's a link to the article!

When we moved here in 2002, our girls were entering 1st and 4th grades.  I called the school in August to enroll them.  The secretary said “bring the girls—we will find a teacher in the building to give them a tour”  And they did!  Then 3-4 days later our 1st grader got a letter from South Carolina saying “Dear Geneva, I am Mrs. Joyce, your first grade teacher.  I am in SC waiting for my daughter to have her baby—can’t wait to meet you in September!”  In February, the 4th Grader, who was a theatrical phenom, was playing in Jane Eyre the Musical a half hour from Westfield.  Her teacher Mrs. McClelland and some buddies trekked out to Piscataway to see her.    Last year our 1st grader was finally a junior, and we sat with her and her guidance counsellor, Andrew Buckner, to game out her s...

Westfield, NJ Market UpdateFebruary, 2014 The hot Westfield, NJ real estate market cooled off just a bit in January (but then again, EVERYTHING cooled off in January!!), with fewer closed sales of single family homes than the previous month.  Additionally, year-over-year closed sales for January were down. This is certainly not a surprise, coming off of the pending sales that went under contract during the traditionally slower holiday season. Oddly enough, while the day-on-market went up significantly, the list-to-sale price ratio also inched up.  These to indicators are often tied together, with overpriced homes sitting on the market not realizing sales close to the asking price. Another, positive sign is that the median sales price for single family homes in Westfield, NJ was up 23% y...

Westfield, NJ Market ReportJanuary, 2014   The final month of 2013 was good for the Westifeld, NJ real estate market, finishing with some extraordinary numbers for homeowners.   It is definitely a Seller's Market in the Westfield, NJ , and the the local housing recovery moves on.   According to data from the New Jersey Association of Realtors® and 10K Research, year-over-year, closed sales for single-family homes outpaced new listings.  In other words, more homes came off the market than went on.  Simple supply and demand tells us that this tends to increase prices.  And, this was the case.  The median home price was up an whopping 39% from December of 2012, to $821,250!!  WOW!!!   The absorption rate (how long it would take for all of the current inventory to sell if nothing new came ...

We got the demo permit just in time to get this house down in 2013.  To build new homes in Westfield NJ, one must get all the utilities disconnected, with letter from the vendors, varmint inspections, asbestos inspections, and then the application is taken to a town meeting.  In most cases, the building permit is not considered until the demo permit is obtained, and demolition by year end allows the assessment to be reduced to land only until the new house C of O is issued, so there is a lot at stake.  We are grateful to have the house down and excited to see the replacement!  2014 looks to be a hot year for new construction in Westfield! Here is a fun, 58 second video of the demolition.  529 Benson Pl Demo.

Way to go 2013! The real estate market in Westfield, NJ is closing out the year strong.  Statistics in the key metrics over the last twelve months show a hearty and robust market, which is leaning a bit in the Seller's direction, which means increasing property values. According to data provided by NJAR® and 10K Reasearch, through November of 2013, every indicator for single family homes sales in Westfield, NJ have supported this. Closed sales are up, while new listings are down.  Due to simple supply and demand, this shows more competition among Buyers for the available properties.  This leads to fewer days on the market and a higher list-to-sales price ratio, all of which have been the case. The absorption rate in November, 2013 (how long it would take for all of the homes to sell if...
