Our area received a little snow in late 08' and also the year before.  area This is certainly not common for the Robertson county area of Texas!  I mentioned to my wife the other day that I thought we were supposed to be in the midst of a global warming trend....but whenever we turn on the news I am confounded at the amount of cold weather our entire nation has received. There certainly has been a lot of snow in the south!  Hope you enjoy the shots!    Certainly doesn't look like Texas does it?   www.treythurmond.com

Rural Communities are very dependent on volunteer fire departments for fire protection. These departments are often limited in equipment and dollars, but many of them make up for those problems with great effort and courage. Located between Hearne and  Wheelock, Texas on FM 391 is the Blackjack Volunteer Fire Department.  This department has done a great job of protecting the area it serves in Robertson County .

Well.. another "unofficial"  Texas Aggie Bonfire came and went this past weekend in Robertson county, Texas.  In case you don't know the real deal was canceled several year back after the official bonfire collapsed killing several Texas Aggie students who were working on the log stacking. The current event is just around the corner from our home near Blackjack community in Robertson County. One of the local land owners has successfully capitalized on this annual event by opening up a large hayfied for parking . Yellow buses were hired to shuffle several thousand Aggies attending from the parking area to the bonfire  a few miles away. I am certain this helps cut down on alcohol related issues and car wrecks.

Farmers and Ranchers in and around Hearne, Texas recently began cutting the last hay crop for 2008.  The Hay business can be a lot like any other crop....... Supply and demand.  This year was a fairly good year for hay in the area but many ranches had hay left over from last year. So the price may be lower. And to top things off the fuel costs could have forced many hay cutters to charge more for cutting and baling a large round bail.

A few years ago a very charming Oriental lady from another country walked into my real estate office and politely said in broken English:  " This where you wash the kidneys ? "  I quickly smiled and replied " No Mam it is not, but I will  certainly take you there!"   Meanwhile bystanders were scratching there heads in confusion wondering what in the heck we were talking about.  But I knew exactly what she meant. A few doors down in the same building was a dialysis center. And you know.... after pondering her statement for a few minutes I concluded in a sense she was correct in her nomenclature. ! Now fast forward a few years and you will discover a brand new center for "washing the kidneys " is being completed  in Hearne, Texas!  It is the Davita Kidney Dialysis  Center.  It is pretty c...

Tonight I enjoyed a great dinner at Ama's Mexican Cafe in Hearne, Texas. We usually dine there once a week and are very fond of the great food. My favorite, right now , is Enchiladas Verde (Green chicken Enchiladas) I know I know  ...sounds gross, but baby it is yummy!!! Now tonight's meal however was more about the waitresses' tips than the meal.  The board members of the Robertson County Child Protective Services worked as waitresses in the restaurant. This is an annual event in which all the tip proceeds from the night go to the  CPS Board to help purchase needed things for kids in foster care. Things like school supplies, Christmas presents,  and other items the kids need and deserve will be purchased from the tips given this night.

While mowing the yard this week I spotted this unusual little fellow . I was first attracted by the beautiful iridescent colors of his "amour".....But until I put on my glasses I didn't realize this beetle had armour  and among other things...  he bears a wicked looking Rhino type horn on his head.  I have seen larger but much plainer beetles with horns before, but none as handsome as this guy.  This is one of the little pleasures we enjoy in our little country setting in Robinson County, Texas.  You really  never know what is going to crawl , walk, or fly into the neighborhood! If you are a nature lover Robinson County is heaven.

The oil and gas boom in Robertson County Texas continues to have a positive effect on the local communities. There has been quite a housing shortage due to the increased number of petroleum employees working and visiting the area. As a result there is a new Hoilday Inn Express going up on the north end Hearne on Hwy 6. Looks like it will be a convenient location for those visiting the area!

The city of Hearne is known as the Sunflower Capitol of Texas. And it isn't difficult to figure out why... if you just take a ride on  a nice sunny day.  I don't know for sure how many varieties of sunflowers there are , but the Hearne area seems to have a number of varieties. It is a known fact that if you want some to appear, just plow up some ground and they will do just that. They come up voluntarily in our flower beds and we like to leave a few of them for color. www.treythurmond.com

I grew up listening to a small town phphenomenon, the 5 o' clock whistle. Actually I recall that they went off at noon and 8 o'clock too.  I believe these whistles were also used for emergency notifications. They are very loud and can be heard from miles away. This particular whistle is located on a water tower in downtown Hearne, Texas and I can still hear it go off occasionally from my home just about 5 miles to the east.  They really have a certain amount of appeal, and are sure handy if you left your watch at home!

One of the advantages of small town livingis shopping for groceries. The local Brookshire Brothers in Hearne is a good place to buy groceries. My wife and I have been there many times over the last few years. I decided to go in this morning and pick up some things and was really surprised at the quality of the produce at 8:00 AM on a Saturday morning. It was as good as any I have seen in much larger mega stores and the prices were good. But there were two other things the store has going for it and will bring me back for sure. First  I was in and out of the store, no bumping shoulders and baskets with crowds, and all the staff are all pleasant and courteous! But the Best Partwas a surprise. I noticed a very pleasant odor in the store today. It was a real "grocery store odor" that I reca...

Yep that is a nickname for Hearne, Texas.....The Crossroads.  Lots of Higway and railway lines come together in Hearne.  Our residence is about 5 miles from the city limit , but we can hear those train cars coupling at night when the wind is right.  It doesn't bother us in the least and somehow it is a reassuring sound that commerce never sleeps  in the USA...even in a small town like Hearne, Tx. Hearne is experiencing sudden economic growth right now, but it still maintains that small town atmosphere.  A pleasant slower pace of life where on Saturday afternoons most lawns are freshly mowed, and the decision on where to eat out tonight isn't too difficult. www.treythurmond.com

Hwy I travel the stretch of Texas Hwy 6 between Hearne and Bryan Texas, twice a day going to and from work, sometimes more often. It has been a fairly dangerous route over the last few years and particularly with all the oilfield trucks using it continuously right now. A few years ago a friend of ours daughter was killed at the location in this photo I took yesterday coming home from work. Last year there was a large truck that overturned in this spot and it took a month to clean up the environmental mess. I came across this fire and couldn't tell what was behind the flames until I got close enough. It appeared to be a brand new truck. Poor guy . He was standing off to the side so I guess he was alright and they wouldn't let me stop.  The state fully intends to improve Hwy 6 all the way...

Located in Robertson County Texas just off Fm 2549 (on of all things "Camp Arrowmoon Road" )...Camp Arrowmoon has been around for many many years. I remember hiking there in 1965 in order to obtain my 20 mile merit badge for scouts . The entrance to the camp hasn't changed much . I love the art deco metal lettering and the native rock columns. Check out the logo on the gate... a moon with an arrow through it. Neat.     Camp Arrowmoon is a great place for Boy Scouts to meet and if your son is going to become a scout in the district, he will most likely end up spending a few weekends at the camp. Lots of pine trees were planted there years ago and if you didn't know better you would think you were in deep east Texas.

Until a few years ago I had never seen a Bluebird. We moved about 40 miles from our last home and then we started seeing them. They are fun to watch and really help control the insect population around our home. We eventually learned about nesting boxes for bluebirds. They need to be situated preferably near an open field and high enough off the ground so varmints won't get at the babies easily. Bluebirds are bossey little boogers and pretty much are kings and queens of their territorty. They chase other larger birds,  they are handsome and serve a great purpose. The nesting boxes are easy to build or buy. This is a  nesting box within viewing distance of our kitchen window. The door opens. Notice the eggs inside.  It was difficult to get a photo of them.        Have a great week! www.t...

Last year we didn't get to cut the hay on our little ranch between Hearne and Franklin , Texas and I won't go into the reason's why ...but this week we finally were able to get a cutting.  Yea! There is nothing quite like the smell of fresh hay when they just cut it and it is laying on the ground drying out waiting to be baled.  Aparently we and most of our neighbors took advantage of the hot dry weather to cut hay in our area this week. Today we saw lots of trailers passing with both round bales and square bales on board.  With the cost of diesel plus increased fertilizer costs, hay will most likely go up in price this year. Where it goes is anybody's guess. Hay is very important to ranchers in the Brazos Valley Area.  I can remember a time when it was like gold and they were shipping ...

This is the second post about Cool Country Street Signs. The first one was a few weeks ago and featured an old Oak Tree. I had forgotenabout  this sign which I pass everyday going to and from work.. It has always been one of my favorite homemade street signs for sure. It is becoming a little worn, and the county has put up a modern regular county sign (Boring) just a few feet away ...but I still like this one way more! It is located at the intersection of Jack Rabbit Lane and FM 2549 in Robertson County, Texas a few miles south east of Hearne, Tx.           There are two rabbits, one on each end of the sign. Have a marvelous Memorial Day! Trey www.robertsoncountyland.com.
