Annies House - Part 16Annie’s house is nearing completion! We are talking of a date to move her back in, and a date for a home coming party...The kitchen and bath cabinets are a fun story. We had been calling around about the cabinets. Home Depot stepped up. They wouldn’t donate the cabinets, but they did sell them at their cost. They have a separate crew that does the installing. These folks had set a schedule of working 4 days a week (I assume 10 hour days) so they could spend more time with their families on the week ends. THIS crew volunteered to install the cabinets, on their own time, for free!Josh McQueen, one of our pastors, was on the job with his dad, installing a toilet. Annies House - Part 15Surprise visitors!If you have been following the saga of Annie’s house, you know that she and her husband bought it years ago as their dream retirement home. Then they got defrauded by a contractor. He gutted their house and ran off with the money.Annie’s husband died, while they were still living in the apartment.Now there was a move to renovate the house, and move Annie back in for her later years.It is a beautiful spot. The Widow - Part 13On the Saturday I shot this video I was really busy.Didn’t make it until late in the afternoon. The workers had all gone home for the day. So the video ended up being a recap of what had been accomplished up to the day.The hillside - once over run with blackberries, was now full of ferns and rhododendrons. There was an erosion barrier at the bottom of the hill.The driveway was beautifully paved, the cement curbs had been put in. The wheelchair ramp was installed for the day when Annie would need it. The outside was all painted. So was the inside. John (the chief of police) wanted to do the first coat painting. He had a good paint sprayer, and like most guys, he loved the feeling of power, accomplishment and - well - MESS that a fully loaded paint sprayer delivers!The... 09/25/2010

The Widow - Part 12HeroesWe have a dearth of heroes in today’s world. Today I present you with some real life heroes.Annie, now 80 plus years old, was dispossessed of her retirement home by an unscrupulous contractor who took some $260,000, gutted her house and ran. HE is certainly not a hero!But now - almost 10 years later, there is a movement to rescue her house from deterioration, fix it up, and move her back in.One of the heroes is Gary. He is the same age as Annie. He had been a pastor. Then a contractor. Now retired.He took this project on as his own. This became his job. The Widow - Part 11The landscaper story.The amazing project of taking a dispossessed widow out of the apartment she had been holed up in and reclaiming and remodelling her house so she could move back in was one of the great things my church was involved in this year and one of my personal high points.   The day our church sent 150 people to volunteer on one house got a lot of attention. The Woodinville Weekly came to do a story. Eventually the TV news caught the story and reported on it.That Saturday a guy was driving by. He screeched on his brakes an came sauntering in. “What’s going on?” he asked.When he heard the story, he went home, loaded up his front loader, and spent the rest of the day helping the dozens of volunteers dig up blackberries and carry them to the two dumpsters.Ano... 09/19/2010
