Elzie Crisler was born in Chester, Illinois back in 1894. As a child he helped his father house painting and paper hanging. He was skilled at playing drums which he put to use providing musical accompaniment to films and vaudeville acts in the local theater.When he turned 18 he took a correspondence course from W.L. Evans of Cleveland, Ohio after work he lit up the oil lamps around midnight and worked on that course until 3 AM. He moved to Chicago and worked for the Chicago Herald moving forward he went to work for King Features Syndicate and the New York Journal.
