How Sedona Got its Name By the time the 1900s rolled around, the area amongst the red rock formations was inhabited by fifteen homesteading families. T.C. Schnebly was one of these enterprising young men whose home also served as the area's first hotel and general store. He also recognized the need for outside communication and organized the first post office. But the area needed a name. The first ideas were Oak Creek Crossing and Schnebly Station but they had too many letters for a postmark. So, after some consideration, it was decided that the town be named after T.C. Schnebly's new wife, Sedona. To discover more interesting history about Sedona, visit the Sedona Heritage Museum at 735 Jordan Road in Uptown Sedona. The Village of Oak Creek, Sedona AZ It might be hard to imagine that a small city the size of Sedona would actually have a bedroom community. But it's true. The Village of Oak Creek is Sedona's beautiful sister, located approximately eight miles south. This sleepy residential community was settled by farmers and ranchers in the late 1800s. Today, it is a peaceful retreat for tourist and is known for its hiking, biking, and golf. The Village, as it is commonly called by locals, lies cradled by the red rocks, Wild Horse Mesa, and House Mountain. As you drive along the heart of the Village, Hwy 179, the views may seem vaguely familiar. Well, if you are a western movie fan, then you've probably seen this area on the big screen. It's been a popular location for movies for many years. There i...

Take Care of the Arizona Environment You turn on your faucet and water flows out. For most of us, this is how we get our water. Unfortunately, it also makes it easy to forget just how much the health of a watershed affects water quality and the people, wildlife, and plants that depend on that water. Well-managed watersheds serve as recreational magnets for humans and critical habitat for wildlife. They also reduce flooding. What is a watershed? Ironically, watersheds are more about land than water. A watershed is all the terrain in a given area that drains to a single point, which can be a lake, stream, wetland, or even the ocean. That includes your yard. It, too, is an important part of the watershed system. What you can do to protect it You have the most control over what happens to t...
