Fort San Juan de Ulúa has been attacked by the British, the Dutch, the French and even the United States while it has been protecting Veracruz, Mexico. The port here is the oldest and largest in Mexico with a fantastic history. Fort San Juan de Ulúa can be reached by boat or a bridge from downtown Veracruz.  The Fort with its museum is well worth the time and small admission fee.     Since I specialize in referrals to and from Latin America, I am often asked exactly what countries I mean.  In the United States and Canada, the term is generally used to refer to all of the countries south of the United States  including the Caribbean.(This is definition that I have been using). Another definition would be all of the lands which were settled by countries using the Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese & French). This definition is not often used because it would include much of the United States and Canada. Another definition would refer to countries currently using one of the Romance languages.     Palacio de Bellas Artes           One of the dramatic buildings that you will see near the center of Mexico City is Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts). Sometimes just called the Opera House of Mexico City. It was completed in 1934 and since then has hosted many dramatic performances of opera,theater, music and dance. Among the noted performers have been Maria Callas, Luciano Pavarotti and the Ballet Folklorico de Mexico.  It has also been the scene of excellent art exhibits including sculpture, paintings and photography. There are also permanent murals including some by Diego Rivera and Siqueiros.       The Door is Open to Mexico - Question:  What Can You Tell me About San Miguel de Allende?       The first city that we will discuss in this series is San Miguel de Allende. It is located in the central highlands of Mexico in the state of Guanajuato, northwest of Mexico City.  There are about 8,000 to 12,000 foreigners here in a population of approximately 140,000.
