Jamaica is the county seat of Queens County, and as such is the location of courthouses and other administrative buildings for the County of Queens, but it is not the location of Queens Borough Hall, which is located in the neighborhood of Kew Gardens. Jamaica Center, the area around Jamaica Avenue and 165th Street, is home to shopping, movie theatres, restaurants, and the Central Library of the Queens Borough Public Library is located nearby.
TransportationThe Jamaica station is a central transfer point on the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR), which is headquartered in a building adjoining the station; all but one of the commuter railroad's lines run through Jamaica. The New York City Subway's E, J, and Z trains terminate at Jamaica Center-Parsons Boulevard, and F trains terminate at Jamaica-179th Street. Many of the bus routes in Queens terminate or pass through the Jamaica Center transit hub. Jamaica also contains John F. Kennedy International Airport, one of the busiest international airports in the United States and the world. AirTrain JFK runs between terminals at JFK, connects to central Jamaica at the LIRR station, and Howard Beach, New York at the Howard Beach-JFK Airport (A) station.

The shopping area in Jamaica is centered on the intersection of 164 Street and Jamaica Avenue, just a short walk from the LIRR and Airtrain (to JFK) station as well as the E, J, and Z subways. King Manor Museum - Today the centerpiece of an 11-acre New York City park in Jamaica, Queens, King Manor Museum was the home and farm of Founding Father Rufus King from 1805 to 1827. Rufus King was an author of the U.S. Constitution, as well as one of New York's first United States Senators, Ambassador to Great Britain and an early, and outspoken, opponent of slavery. King Manor later became the estate of King's son, John Alsop King, who served as New York's Governor. King Manor has been a museum since 1900. King Manor is owned by the City of New York, operated by the King Manor Association of L.I., Inc., and is a member of the Historic House Trust of N.Y.C.
