I don't live in an area where auctions happen often, but how many multi million dollar works of art have been sold by auction? Perhaps for certain properties, an auction is the right choice.

Well, every time when we list a house in the local mls we sort of offer it for  public bidding and if the price is attractive we receive multiple offers. The price does not matter: works the same for  a few thousands home or multimillion one.

Myers Jackson I wouldn't have a problem with either one. One of the problems I've run into is real estate owners don't want to pay the upfront cost to sell via auction.

Christies had been around a long time.

They don't auction the cheap stuff nor work with the uninformed.

And the big money people buy and sell via that auction house.

   I am a former member of Ocala Marion County Association of Realtors.  They auction off $1.5 million dollar horses there.  And, $1.5 million dollar houses.

I have no issues selling by auction if that's the best option.  Our office does work with auctions and in some areas it's a win - win.

Myers, if I had the need to auction a property and felt it was the best way to handle the sale I would find, hire and trust a reputable company to auction a house or a $1.5 mil horse.  Although I don't have any horses, since even though my property is zoned for equestrian I just am not a horse person... I say "naaay" to horses.  :-)

I prefer the live auctions like on TV (storage wars) or fine art/collectibles auctions.  Call the number out loud so everyone knows.  I'd opt to have a reserve so if only one person shows up that day they don't get it for a penny over.

The on line auction sites are selling homes left and right. That includes a tradtional sale. Often it has local MLS and agent presence as well. Buyers need to pay the auctioner virtual or real.

If proper preparation goes into it then the yield can be higher than letting the home sit on the market with all the others. Yes, I trust auctioneers.

My good friend from the DJ world turned auctioneer, I'd trust him to sell the horse and to refer me the house. 

I would certainly make sure they were qualified before trusting them.

My vote is for the horse.

It would not be a problem for me as long as all the costs are presented up front.

Myers - It would be the individual that I would have to trust, not whether they were auctioning a home or performing a standard listing sale. If I trust someone, I would be all for an auctioneer selling a home, or a horse.
