Asus is a good brand, they have been making them forever. Go for the best chip you can get, in this case to at least an i7. The i5 is old now by standards (and costs less) . And make sure to get an SSD, not a traditional hard drive. And lastly, make sure where you buy that you can get local support, just in case.

I am strictly a Toshiba fan. Have never used an Asus.

When I was a PC user, I liked Toshiba.  Now that I'm an Apple guy, while I'll never say never, I doubt, I'll ever go back.

Sorry, I don't know.  I'm not actually a fan of choosing by brand, but more by features.

I only buy Toshiba laptops, the Satellite has always been better than HP in my opinion.

Buying a computer is like buying a car. We all have the brand that we like firmly in mind. We still need to pick out the features that we need. I have been in the Dell camp for years. My current one is a couple of years old. A dinosaur, I suppose. It still gets the job done.

I'm a Mac user, but the SSD is a good suggestion, makes loading applications much snappier. Also the i5 will be fine unless you are doing video editing or heavy processing. Most people are oversold computer processing power. 

For the most part I've had good luck in the past with Acer Eileen Burns  but for the past several years I've been using Dell and have been completely satisfied. It seems to me I owned a Asus for a shot period of time with not so good of luck.

The brand is less important than the components. Most of these units are made on the same assembly line. In my opinion you need at a minimum an i5 cpu, 8 gig memory (16 would be better), 500 gb storage. You are better off spending your money on the apps you need. You won’t notice any difference between brands.

I have an HP. I found that the larger screen/higher priced Acer's are more reliable than their compact models.

My i7 quad-core is about 5 years old at this point you need at least that level of chip... my suggestion is to checkout independent reviews including Consumer Reports most library systems subscribe and you should call your local to see what info they have for you. Eileen Burns 

I think Asus is a better brand. They have a few remarkably light lap tops available. Good luck go with at least an I7. SSD is better & be sure you can add RAM.

I have Toshiba & it's great.

     I'm not happy with my current HP laptop.  Screen is way too dark.   Maybe I will buy an Acer.   Let me read the answers here (good answers so far from Richard Bazinet /MBA, CRS, ABR and Joseph Domino 480-390-6011) 

I had the best luck and service from HP products.

Been Apple for a long time and haved save a lot of money not doing PCs especially with issues with Windows requiring tech work. There is alearning curve but not too difficult.

I'm very happy with my old Acer.  Not too familiar with ASUS though.  Toshiba is another good brand.  Stay away from Dell, Lenovo, HP, Compaq and eMachines.

I use the HP envy x360 and love it so much i have 2.

I think the founders of Asus (4) were from Acer... originally.  I have not used either of those, however have used Toshiba (which I did not like...sorry to those who according to your answers.. do... )  I am a die hard HP Laptop user... I can't say I have ever had an issue with any that I've owned, however, I think for every laptop suggested and loved here... there will be others that can't stand the brand...  Sort of like CRM's... :)

It is my understanding the Asus is ok... had an over all ranking of 4 this year in the survey I'd looked thru...

I have an Asus and like it well enough. It is still a Windows PC and I am looking to move to a Mac. I think you would be happy with the Asus.

I've been a Dell user for over 20 years. 

That said when it comes time to replace I will not get another Dell. 

The support is not there. 

I do not know what I will purchase next, I will buy local where I can get local support.

No experience with the model you mention.  If you have a trusted/knowledgeable person in your world, I would try it on for size. Good luck.

Oh my:) I threw away all my PCs and Windows running laptops back in 2008 and make the switch to MacBook pros, iPhones, iMacs, iPads... and never looked back:)

SSD cost has come down that may be you want to consider a more robust drop environment......

Eileen, interesting feedback as we have an Acer Aspire laptop as well.  I had never heard of Asus but the recommendation you received was something to file away for future reference.

I bought an Acer tablet years ago, but never used it much.  I stick with Dell laptops.

I upgraded to an ASUS laptop last year and LOVE it! It is an i7 with 16GB RAM 64-bit operating system. It has an SSD. I don't know a ton about computers but had been using a computer that my former husband built years ago (he's a computer geek and knows a lot). He recommended my current laptop and it has been SO much better than my old desktop. I bought my ASUS at Costco on sale last year. 

I use a macBook Pro laptop, and would not use a PC again.

I got a surface pro and I love it. It moves so fast. Its light and easy to travel with

I do like Acer and have never had a problem with them
