Will,

I have driven I 70  during a snowstorm in a rental car that had the wrong tires for this type of driving.  I think that wise car dealerships should have snow tires as part of the lease given the unpredictable Colorado weather.  My life, the life of my dear ones is worth more than worrying about the price of snow tires...A

I would rather buy the SUV. When I moved to Danbury, CT I had a 4X4 Tahoe. It worked fine in average snow conditions but when we got more than average snow here it felt like it was not enough for every situation, or my sloped, curvy driveway! I went out & bought snow tires for it because I needed it for the winter up here. It was a great decision, I never had to worry about getting caught out there again.

The idea of driving in treacherous snow conditions might have me contacting the moving company.  When I lived in Washington DC I used the excellent mass transit system in the area and lived close to a subway station.  I really liked not having that hassle.

I-70 is wild, I've experienced nice & sunny in one valley, while it was a bad snow storm in the next valley, was not believing those yellow flashing road signs at first.

I've also seen the aftermath of a vehicle sliding off the road in the opposite direction during a storm on I-70, I'm sure that it was likely fatal.

I remember driving in Colorado in the '70s and a state trooper made me either buy chains or turn around and find another route!

Needless to say, it was cheaper to buy the chains that are in the garage someplace.

Either listen to Lyn Sims or cover them in duct tape so they cannot be seen!

I'd make sure I had an all wheel drive vehicle to drive in your area.... snow tires aren't safe enough for that type of driving....

It's a question of how safe do you want your family to be out on that Interstate in winter. Tire technology today would make me have a full set of winter and summer tires in that environment. I have driven in worse conditions than I-70 presents. The goal is always to arriuve at your destination safely.

I've never leased a car so don't know for sure what I'd do..  That being said, if I had cause to drive I-70 in the mountains often during the winter, I'd buy a car that could handle the trip.

I just purchased a set of winter tires w/studs even though I have a AWD subaru. Most of the roads here are fine, but there are a few that will be problematic and I want to be ready!

If the roads are that treacherous, they should be closed.

I have observed the tires or type of propulsion has little benefit for the one who has never encountered water in a solid form or those who think that 'high rider' makes them impervious to the laws of physics.

The irony is, these are the same folks who deemed it ok for 11 mph bicycles to share the lane with 55 mph motor vehicles. The assurance of calamity is greater, while the lawmakers lament about making streets safer for pedestrians and cyclist.

I suggest recording the names of those who signed this into law and ship the tires to them when no longer needed or worn out.

The good news is, the CO Department of Highways knows how to clear a road quickly.  Here in Florida, special materials are used to prevent snow and ice accumulation...so I've been told.

Just be aware, once you go SUV, there is no going back.

I'd go the AWD route. We made the switch several years ago, and the ability to safely travel in marginal conditions without the need to get out and put the chains on is well worth it!

Also, we have a very moist, mostly non-snow winter season so the AWD performs far better than studded snow tires in rainy road conditions.

I'm not understanding the question . . .  back when I leased my vehicles, it was normal practice to switch to snow tires before Halloween and remove them at Easter.  Since when does a lease interfere with that?

PS in Quebec it is mandatory that all vehicles have snow tires on for the winter, city driving or mountains.
