I get this question a lot. Can I get a mortgage to buy a home if I owe the IRS back taxes?  The answer is yes and no.  It just depends on your situations.  Here is a break down of your options when owing the IRS:  A Tax Lien- if you have an outstanding tax lien and it appears on your credit report. It must be paid. Back Taxes- If you owe the IRS back taxes for the last year or 2 and are in a payment plan that is okay. I see this situation almost daily where someone wants to buy their home before selling their current home. It could be because your new home is not ready to sell, your dream home came on the market, etc.  So if you thinking of buying a home before selling your current home here are a couple mortgage options to keep in mind:  Do a 2nd mortgage- Since you may be short money for your down payment since it is in the equity of your current home. You can do a 2nd mortgage for the difference. So instead of putting down a 20% down payment, do a first mortgage for the 80% of the sales price and a 15% 2nd mortgage.
